Applied Behavior Analysis Research Articles – This week we take a deeper look at the field of behavior analysis, also called “ABA.” ABA) is based on scientifically proven methods using 7 dimensions (Baer, Wolf, Risley, 1968) that all practitioners must follow. It is important that each individual’s treatment plan has goals following the following 7 dimensions: 1) General, 2) Effective, 3) Technical, 4) Applied, 5) Conceptual, 6) Analytical, 7) Behavioral. When behavior is aimed at change, that change should not be planned to happen just now or some time later. Behavior modification, meaning the skills acquired during treatment, must stand the test of time. It also needs to be maintained across people and environments long after treatment is complete.

Although programming takes place initially in this environment, treatment must be designed in a way that reflects the individual’s natural environment. Each of the important social behaviors is individual to them and the skills that will enable the individual to function easily and successfully in their environment. For an intervention to be socially beneficial, it must make a significant change that is sustained over time.

For example, if a child is misbehaving because they cannot express their wants and needs well, what would be a meaningful behavior to target? Teaching the child how to effectively communicate his wants and needs will be a socially beneficial goal. This will immediately affect the daily life of the client and those who interact with the child on a daily basis (family members, teachers, friends). When considering treatment interventions, the team should always consider how immediately important the target behavior change will be to the client.
To say that an intervention is conceptual means that the intervention is based on research and represents the principles of applied behavior analysis. An important question to ask: “Does this intervention conform to the principles determined to be effective as described in the study?”
Being analytical means looking at data to make data-driven decisions, which means we need to collect data for interventions. When looking at the data, if the intervention you are using does not show a change/increase in the desired behavior, then the change is warranted. Once the intervention is changed and the data shows an increase in the desired direction, then we can demonstrate a reliable relationship between our intervention and increased positive behavior. This raises a question of faith: is the use of an intervention and data showing change sufficient to demonstrate a reliable relationship between effectiveness?
Behavior must be observed and measured in order to change. If we can observe and see behavior, we can measure it with data, then we can change it (Gilmore, 2019). When we say the word “behavior” it does not mean “bad” behavior, but behavior can also be appropriate behavior or conduct. Behavior analysts want to increase some behaviors and decrease others. It is also important to describe the “behavior change” in terms of how the child’s life changes, not just the child’s behavior.
