Awesome Science Experiments For 5th Graders
I know from my own experience that one of the obstacles in conducting science experiments with children is that they are not always as good as they should be. This can be difficult, especially if you have a child who can’t wait to ask why it’s not working!
Density Science Experiments
I assure you that all our experiences have been tested and I will not share anything that will upset you. But I also want to say that it’s okay if the experience doesn’t go perfectly the first time. By this I mean that sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to figure out how the experience works, and that’s normal.
And kids learn A LOT in the process of figuring out what went wrong. For example, yesterday we worked on static electricity experiments to share with you. We couldn’t get the balloons to do what they were supposed to do (blow each other up), but then I noticed my son was releasing the balloons. When the spheres touched each other, it equalized the charge between the spheres and there was no more resistance! My son learned that when objects touch each other, they pass through their electrical charges.
Another time, we tried to light steel wool with a battery and learned that the tip of the steel wool is important. In fact, it is very important. As long as we had the right gauge, it worked great!
Fortunately, we’re reminded that science can sometimes be confusing, but it’s always a learning experience. And now… to the experiments!
Fun Steam And Stem Activities For Kids
Make some warm ice from baking soda and vinegar. This ice isn’t actually ice…it’s a chemical solution that crystallizes as soon as you pour it! So cool, I mean hot. Due to the heat released when it crystallizes, it is very hot to the touch!
Test the acids and bases by making your own red cabbage pH indicator. This is really cool! Impressive results and it’s simple and error-free.
This sand volcano is a fun twist on the classic baking powder and vinegar volcano! It’s much easier than papier-mâché and kids can make the volcano erupt over and over again.
Make pennies shiny again with vinegar and salt! It’s amazing how bright and clean they are. Find your dirtiest pennies and try this experiment!
Fun Science Experiments For Kids To Do At Home
If you haven’t tried blowing up a balloon with baking soda and vinegar, you really should! It’s fun for preschoolers and up.
Light the steel wool with the battery. This project requires adult help and supervision, but it’s FUN! To make it super easy, put everything on a baking tray.
Point out that air takes up space – it’s easy for children to think that air is ‘nothing’, but air is matter because it takes up space and has mass. Prove it with a great show!
Here are two science experiments with density – a ping pong ball in corn is awesome! It’s fun to play with.

Bouncy Ball Science – Kids investigate whether the temperature of a ball affects how high it bounces. It is very easy to do and has very clear results. In other words, it’s a science experiment with very little frustration!
Don’t melt the ice! Children create a device that holds the ice the longest.
Make a Wind Turbine – Use a cardboard coffee box and other simple materials to make this wind turbine.
Demonstrate the effect of friction on the speed of a rolling marble with this Cake Pan Friction Experiment.

Energy Transfer Experiment – Use a slotted ruler and some marbles to demonstrate how energy transfers from one object to another. This is another simple experiment with impressive results that will probably surprise children.
Use a toy to demonstrate how snowshoes work. Kids can really enjoy how snowshoes (or big paws) distribute weight and prevent them from sinking into the snow.
Create working mechanisms – from Popsicle sticks and plastic caps! And a cardboard box. This fun mechanical project uses all recycled materials!
Use LEGO bricks to build some pulleys. Kids really feel the mechanical advantage that rollers create. Very cool!
