Career Paths For Math Majors – Both the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Mathematics require a core foundation, along with additional courses specific to one of seven possible concentrations:
Each emphasis requires a minimum of 15 of a 400-level mathematics course, and each emphasis except mathematics education requires students to complete a minor.

All majors and SDSs must complete a computer-based curriculum, regardless of degree and chosen emphasis. One of the following courses is recommended for most students: CSC 110, ISTA 130, ECE 175, or CHEE 205; Other options may require additional requirements and/or majors or minors in other subjects.
The seven majors for B.A./B.S require the following core courses, which must be completed by the end of the second year.

(3) 323 is a writing emphasis course that forms the basis of many advanced courses taken by majors. 400-level courses are required in the major. Students who have not completed 323 should discuss their major choice/preference with an advisor. 396L, Wildcat Proofs Workshop, is an additional 1 course designed to provide students with additional practice and guidance in learning proofwriting techniques. Students with a C or lower in 313 require course 396L, a prerequisite for 323. Students who receive a D in 313 must repeat 313 for a higher grade or take another course (243, 315, or CSC 245). . ) before going to 323 + 396L.
(4) 355 is the differential equations course that all mathematics majors are required to take. This course emphasizes the concept of dynamical systems and uses a more advanced approach to differential equations. 254 is a differential equations course designed for engineering and science majors. Students majoring in engineering or science may request permission from their advisor to substitute 254 courses for 355 if there are scheduling issues. Remember that 254 is a lower division – students taking it may need an additional upper division.

Students intending to attend graduate school in statistics, economics, or another related field are encouraged to choose this option instead of (or in addition to) the SDS major. Prospective Math Majors

This emphasis is for students preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary level. The education specialization has two main components, a set of ematic courses and a set of pedagogical courses. (*) LCEV 408 — Methods of Teaching English to English Language Learners — also meets this requirement but is not currently available to SMEP students through the College of Education.

Types Of Math Majors

Students double majoring in Computer Science and Ematics may double dip additional courses between these two majors within reasonable limits. It is important to consult with advisors from both majors when planning your studies to avoid graduation delays.
A minor or major in biological sciences is required for this emphasis. Options include Astrobiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics (majors only), Biology, Biosystems Engineering, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Environmental Science, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physiology, Physiological and Medical Sciences, and Pre-Health or Promatics with a minor in Life Sciences.
