Christian Universities In Southern California – California Baptist University (Cal Baptist or CBU) is a private Christian university located in Riverside, California. Founded in 1950 as California Baptist College, it is affiliated with the California Southern Baptist Convtion, an organization affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convtion. CBU is accredited by the WASC Sior College and University Commission.
Founded in 1950 as California Baptist College in El Monte, California, the new college enrolled 120 students in its first year under the leadership of its first president, P. Boyd Smith. In 1953, the college moved under the wing of the California Southern Baptist Convtion, the year the first issue of Angelos, the college journal, was published. In 1954, the college received a charter from the state of California.

The university quickly outgrew its space, and in 1955, the campus moved to the suburbs of Riverside. The campus moved to a larger 75.6-acre campus that had been built for use as offices, classrooms, and housing. What is now known as the Annie Gabriel Library, was first built in 1921. In 1927, the original administration building was built but W.E. James Building was built in 1934. The building housing the ceramics studio and boiler room was built in 1938. In 1958, the college named its second president, Dr. Lloyd Simmons.

In 1961 CBU received full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In 1964, the university began to expand by building the Lancer Arms apartment complex and the number of students increased to 500.
In 1968, the Smith and Simmons residences were built and named in honor of the university’s first two presidents. These new dormitories allow for more space in the university.
In 1971, Dr. James R. Staples was named the third university president. Two years later, the Wallace Book of Life Theater was built. In 1978, the $800,000 bond for the Riverside campus was finally paid off and burned in a university celebration.
Dr. Russell R. Tuck became the president of the fourth College in 1984. In the same year, the first title was awarded and the National Association of Schools of Music Award.
Colleges With Christian Affiliations
In 1991, Wanda’s Place was established, a campus cafe named in honor of a famous university employee. Three years later, Dr. Ronald L. Ellis and the following year the number of schools reached 1,000.
California Baptist College was the first college on the West Coast to receive accreditation from the Association of College Business Schools and Programs in 1996. The following year, enrollment reached 2,000.
Music School was established in 2002 with Dr. The new Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education followed in 2003. In the same year, the new campus, known as Yeager Cter, opened classrooms, administrative offices, cafeterias, computer labs, and professors’ offices.
In mid-2004, a new residence hall was built, and that year the university enrolled its first students in the Master of Music program.

The School of Engineering was established in 2006. The inaugural class in fall 2007 consisted of 55 students.
On August 30, 2011, Domaine Javier was expelled from California Baptist University for being a transgender woman.
The reason for Javier’s dismissal was that he was accused of “committing or attempting to commit forgery, or concealing his identity” when applying and being accepted as a woman at the school. A California trial court granted a partial victory to the university and Javier.
On September 8, 2015, CBU offered its first bachelor’s degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) through the School of Nursing.

The Annie Gabriel Library is named in honor of Miss Annie Gabriel, who made the gift that enabled the first collection to develop.
In addition to more than 110,000 printed books and a collection of 150,000 e-books, the library provides access to more than 30,000 journal titles and 79 databases. The library has a collection of more than 17,000 DVDs and live videos. Along with a research computer lab, the library has wireless service throughout the building.
California Baptist University is known in the city of Riverside for its Mission Revival style architecture. Many of the older structures on campus were built in the 1920s and 30s, when this particular style was popular. The Mission Inn in downtown Riverside was also built in the Mission Revival style. The buildings constructed on campus follow this architectural tradition.
In 2004, CBU was recognized in a November 2004 article in American School and University magazine, recognizing excellence in educational design, for the establishment of Yeager Cter, by Kroh/Broeske Architects in Riverside. The university also received an award from the city of Riverside.

The new building for Jabs CBU Business School was dedicated and opened for use in August 2012.
The new Recreation Center building was dedicated in January 2013 offering a variety of fitness options for students and staff.
The new building for CBU’s Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering, the Dennis and Carol Troesh Engineering Building, was dedicated and opened for use in July 2018.
On September 20, 2019, CBU dedicated its new 10,800-square-foot Athletic Performance Center, the largest facility for an NCAA Division I non-football institution in the state of California.

CBU’s Office of Campus Activities hosts social and recreational events every year, including: Fortuna Bowl, flag football championship game with m and wom teams on the front lawn of the campus in November; Midnight Madness, an intense event that kicks off the basketball season by introducing the m and wom basketball teams to hundreds of students cheering on the evts cter. Promote school spirit with games and activities such as dunk and three-pointer contests, and free food and prizes for fans; Yule, formal dinner and tertainmt night at the main vue of Southern California featuring Mr. & Ms. CBU in early December; Breakfast at night, held in the last week of each semester, where teachers and school staff can provide breakfast for students; and TWIRP (Women Will Pay), a weekly event where female students invite male students to participate in fun events and activities throughout the week. This week’s highlights include: Barn Dances, complete with callers, square dances, and costume contests, events on and off campus including concerts, Angels and Dodgers baseball games, and trips to Disneyland, Sky Zone and Southern California Travel. .
The International Service Project, or ISP, is a CBU-based program that allows students to serve abroad for three weeks during the summer. ISP teams consist of 8-10 students and are led by CBU faculty or staff. Since its establishment in 1997, the ISP team has served more than 40 countries on six continents. While overseas, the team participates in a variety of service activities that may include music, drama, sports, ethnography, children’s ministry, and teaching skills. Studt can participate in the United States Service Plan, or USP, which is organized similarly to ISPs but targeted to US destinations.
The California Baptist (Cal Baptist) sports team is called the Lancers. The university is a member of the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the first competitor in the Western Athletic Conferce (WAC) for the most sports in the 2018 academic year- 19;
If the water polo team competes in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA); and the women’s water polo team competes in the Gold Coast Conferce (GCC). The Lancers previously competed in the NCAA Division II-ranked Pacific West Conference (PacWest) from 2011-12 to 2017-18; and in the Gold State Athletic Conferce (GSAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from 1987–88 to 2010–11.
Southern California Leadership University
M sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, track (distance), water polo and wrestling; while women’s sports include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, stunts, swimming & diving, track (distance), volleyball and water polo; and co-curricular sports including cheerleading and dancing. Women’s volleyball will be a varsity sport in the future.
California Baptist University is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior High Schools and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In March 2011, WASC granted the university 10 years of accreditation, the longest accreditation period granted by WASC.
This is the first time in CBU’s more than 60-year history that the institution has received the highest extension of accreditation.
