Our Master’s Degree in Counseling – Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration consists of 60 courses. The core curriculum covers 30 of those credits and the remaining 30 are cumulative.

You will complete a total of 100 hours of practical experience and 600 hours of supervised practice split between three practice areas. This will prepare you for Licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania. Graduates of the program must pass the National Board Exam and meet the post-level supervision requirements necessary to obtain LPC certification in the state of Pennsylvania.

Completing our program is a major professional achievement that marks the end of your time as an entry-level consultant. Postgraduate, pre-licensed counselors work under the supervision of a licensed counselor to meet state supervised practice requirements.

In Pennsylvania, this requirement includes 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, which must be no less than 2 years and no more than 6 years. Therefore, the licensing process can take several years to complete.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master’s Program
NOTE: If your GPA is below 3.0, you must provide proof of acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). We require a score of 292 or higher and also complete an analytical writing test.
Currently, the GRE requirement is waived for graduate students or applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
You may transfer six (6) graduate credits completed at an accredited institution for comparable courses if you earned at least a B in each course. Consignment loan decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
The Postgraduate Clinical Mental Health Certificate program is designed for graduates of Gwynedd Mercy University’s Master of School Counseling program. This certificate program requires 12 credits of graduate counseling courses (including 200 hours of experience in a clinical mental health setting) and allows students to complete the credits necessary to sit for the NCE and ultimately become licensed as a professional counselor.

Difference Between Clinical Psychology And Counseling
The mission of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is to train culturally competent mental health counselors who integrate current, evidence-based interventions and techniques to promote the health and relationships of their clients.
This 60-credit hour program is offered in a hybrid format and will be completed in 28 months. Some of your classes will be in the evening and some of your classes will be offered online.
In addition to coursework, students have the opportunity to interact directly with clients at the university’s on-site counseling clinic.
The curriculum includes instruction in theoretical theories and approaches, specific areas of mental health, and clinical experiences applied during practicum and internship (minimum 700 hours, including 280 face-to-face hours with clients).

During the internship, students spend 15 hours per week (approximately) working in a community counseling service under the supervision of professional counselors.
The capstone includes the completion of a final clinical project evaluated by faculty. Once the clinical project is approved, the student advances their candidacy and can apply for graduation.
