Minorities made up 33.8 percent of the fall 2014 incoming class, or 104 of the 309 students enrolled, according to a class profile on the law school’s website. That’s a jump from 26.8 percent in the 2010-11 school year, when 83 of the 310 students enrolled were minorities.
Nationally, there has been a steady decline in minority applications to law schools. African-American applicants dropped 9.4 percent from 2012 to 2013, according to the Law School Admissions Council’s annual report.
However, minority enrollment has increased at Florida State University and the University of Florida. Minority enrollment at UF Law increased by 1 percent overall from fall 2013 to 2014.
In 2014, 29 of the 309 law students who entered law school were African American. Another 28 are Hispanic. According to Matt Walker, assistant director of communications at UF Levine College of Law, since 2013, African-American enrollment has dropped 1.7 percentage points, while Hispanic enrollment has increased 2.7 percentage points.

Jennifer Kessinger, director of admissions at Florida State University’s College of Law, said the school’s minority enrollment increased in the last admissions cycle.
“Our 2014 freshman class was 30.85 percent minority, compared to 2013’s 2013 freshman total of 19.41 percent,” he said.
The FSU Black Law Student Association won two bar competitions and Chapter of the Year at the regional meeting on the weekend of January 24th. In 2014, Hispanic Business ranked the law school second in the nation for Hispanic students, after Florida International University School of Law.
In 2014, 11 percent of FSU Law applicants were African-American and 19 percent were Hispanic, Kissinger said. The school’s fall 2014 class had 188 students, 15 black and 30 Hispanic.

According to the 2010 census, 16 percent of Florida residents were African American and 22.5 percent were Hispanic or Latino.
As Johnson grew up, he saw other minority students excluded from an education system that he says systematically turned against them.
“If I don’t think about my education, it doesn’t matter,” Johnson said. “A lot of black kids weren’t in gifted programs.”
“Once you get to a point, you have to give back to your community and your culture,” he said. “If there were more minorities in the legal system, they would help to see injustice.
