We recognize the ground we sit on at Pacific University’s College of Health Professions. What we call Washington County is based on the traditional lands of the Atfalati, Tualatin Kalapoya, Clatskanee, Chinook and many other tribes who made their homes here and were displaced and forcibly removed by the United States government. Today, many Native Americans continue to make sacrifices while making significant contributions to our society. Past and present communities are active and vibrant contributors throughout the land we call Washington County. In Oregon, the federal government took away tribal sovereignty and reservation land from more than 60 tribes in 1953. In the 20th century, discriminatory housing policies including redlining and segregation zoning led to the displacement of people of color. This recognition creates a commitment to eradicate the enduring legacy of settler colonialism.
