Delta previously had a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program, but that program was suspended during the pandemic because students could not visit medical facilities to complete their clinics.

The program is back and for the first time, it will be offered in collaboration with the Lodi Adult School. In the Adult School, lecture classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays, and practical sessions are organized on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In total, the workload is more than 25 hours per week.

It only takes nine weeks to complete, but the CNA program is a great way to open the door to a medical career by gaining entry-level experience in hospitals, nursing homes or other medical facilities. If they choose, students can pursue a nursing degree or other advanced healthcare training after completing the program.

The Lodi Adult School has already designed a clinical room with all the necessary equipment. Now it’s all about finding students.

Anyone can apply to Delta College to participate in the program. But one of the benefits of partnering with Lodi Adult School is that CNA is now more accessible to working adults. If needed, they can also earn high school diplomas while earning their CNA certification.

Courses are taught online, but there is also 25 hours of hands-on experience in a clinical setting. Students learn basic nursing skills, personal care skills and social service needs of residents, basic restorative services and more. Upon successful completion of the course, students may take the State Nursing Assistant Registration Exam. In Minnesota, you can become a CNA as young as 16, making this course a great opportunity for students to start a career in the medical field. This course is offered through the LinK12 Lakeville Online School and is open to LinK12 Lakeville, Lakeville North and Lakeville South students in grades 11 and 12.

The second new course is Environmental and Biomedical Engineering, offered through Lakeville South High School’s STEM Academy program. Students participate in health and environmental career experiences through semester-long course projects and interaction with mentors. Students use cutting-edge laboratory and engineering techniques, such as the use of 3D printers, 3D scanners and AV/VR technologies. Students conduct research and apply the engineering design process to define a problem and design and build solutions. This course provides opportunities for students to network with professionals in the field, exposing them to career opportunities after high school. This course is held at Lakeville South High School and is open to students in grades 9-12 at Lakeville South, Lakeville North, and Link12 Lakeville Online School.

“These two courses were created based on student demand and staffing needs in these areas,” said Cindy Nolan, the district’s careers coordinator.

These two new courses were officially approved by the Board of Education at its regular meeting on January 25th.
