Emphasis in exercise science is science-based and focuses on integrating anatomical, psychological, biomechanical, and physiological principles related to human movement, exercise, and rehabilitation. Many students focus on exercise science to build a strong foundation before pursuing studies in exercise science or other health professions such as medical school, dentistry, or chiropractic.

The pre-physical therapy focus is designed to prepare students for entry into a physical education degree program. Physiotherapists help people with limited mobility and functional activities. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health organizations, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes.

As part of the core requirements, physical education students take courses that qualify for certification in elementary school. To obtain a second teaching license for grades 6-12, students must complete a 35-credit Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP), which includes one semester of student teaching in a community setting. This program is administered by the School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) within USU’s Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. A student must apply to the TEAL school in the semester prior to taking STEP courses. This is usually the fall of their junior year. Students study academic content through the HPER unit and spend the last year or two studying teaching methods through the STEP program.

Students in the physical education program are encouraged to choose a minor in teaching to enhance their career options.
