Practical Nursing Program
The prerequisite course for the Practical Nursing Course consists of the following four general education courses (244 contact hours):
Our practical nursing course provides the fundamental knowledge needed to succeed in a practical nursing program. These courses last approximately 10 weeks for morning crash courses and 13 weeks for evening sessions.

North Shore College’s Wheeling campus has one computer lab, one anatomy and physiology lab, and two state-of-the-art nursing labs. On November 4, 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued an emergency order requiring health care workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Individuals considering applying to this program should be aware that starting in spring 2022, vaccination against COVID-19 will be required to participate in clinical trials. The most recent accreditation decision ACEN’s board made for associate nursing programs is to continue accreditation.
Those wishing to enroll in this major must first gain admission to Penn College. Admission to this elective is based on additional requirements other than university admission. More information can be found on the Selective Admissions Criteria and Processes website.
All students offered a reserved seat in this major must maintain a math/science grade of 2.5 or higher and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher before entering the first nursing course. If the student does not meet the required grades, the student will lose their place and be transferred to the pre-nursing major. Re-selection of a major is required in the next selection period and is subject to current selection admission criteria. In addition, all students must earn a C (2.0) or higher in all NUR, CHM, and BIO courses. If you receive a lower grade in any of these courses, you must retake that course.

Licensed Practical Nurse (lpn) Programs
A child abuse clearance and criminal background check are required for this specialty, per the Clinical Affiliation Agreement. Institutions may prohibit students from participating in clinical experiences at the institution if they have a criminal record or test positive for drugs. Under the contract that places Pennsylvania Tech students in clinical settings, the agency has the right to request random drug testing. Failure to complete a clinical, fieldwork, or intern teaching experience will result in failure to meet program and course outcomes. Students may speak to the Program Director for further clarification.
The Pennsylvania Board of Nursing advises that drug-related convictions and/or felony convictions or two misdemeanor convictions may result in the denial and/or revocation of a nursing license.
