Oceanography studies the dynamics of how the ocean regulates climate, how ocean acidification affects all marine organisms, how ocean winds sustain life forms, unique land and geological processes on our coasts that affect life, and how the 50% of our oxygen comes from plankton. It brings together ecology, chemistry, physics and geology to help predict how to sustain life on earth.
Students need not be limited to majors in Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, Oceanography or Biology. Marine Biology can complement a variety of majors on the UW campus. Immerse yourself in research and study at the Florida Keys Marine Biology Station for a semester. Building on the College’s 50-plus year marine biology program, the college has added a new Marine Biology Semester in the Florida Keys (beginning in 2019-20). During this semester-long residency program, the College’s Marine and Environmental Science majors with a marine biology track will take 2 courses, complete an internship at a local maritime organization, and collect data for their senior thesis research project – throughout their stay at that particular college location. J.N. Roth Marine Biological Station in the culturally rich and diverse environment of Layton, Florida. The Marine Biology Semester is offered each year in the fall semester for 10 weeks.
Students take BIOL 232 Oceanography on campus before participating in field courses. This is a requirement for a 3-week course in May, Marine Biology BIOL 304. In this course students begin their senior thesis research work. Courses during the Marine Biology semester include two intensive field courses (BIOL 334 Marine Ecology and BIOL 343 Invertebrate Zoology), which include day snorkeling excursions, morning lectures, and evening lab activities at the Center J.N. Roth Marine Biological Station.
Students complete a 120-hour internship during the semester and receive three credits. Potential internship sites include: Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Florida Marine Research Institute, National Park Service, REEF, Mote Marine Lab, Keys Marine Lab and Florida Sea Grant, etc.

So here is my guide on how to become a marine biologist, designed for students of all ages, those considering marine biology, those already doing it but struggling to stay the course, and those who already have the degree but are considering it. I’m going to be back for more. These tips come from my own experiences as well as my 22 years as a professor in academia teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. These are certainly my opinions, but one formed by watching 100’s of students go on to successful careers in marine biology and many more who did not.
Embrace all things ocean. Becoming an oceanographer is a long journey, one that has many twists and turns. What gets you started and where you end up can be very different things. As your journey evolves, you must be open to change, embrace your new interests and experiences. The common denominator is of course the sea and its life. You may start out loving dolphins, but you may develop a passion for starfish. In the end it is your passion for the ocean and marine life that must be maintained because it will sustain you. See the ocean in everything you do: biology, chemistry, physics, math, you will enjoy or suffer – your choice – through these subjects if you don’t see how important they are to get where you want to go Trust me, they are all important, but it may not seem so at the time. As you progress to upper division courses such as marine ecology, ichthyology and invertebrate biology, you will see relevance and reap the benefits of your foundational work. Hang in there, it gets much better. You can’t predict where you’ll end up or what will be important, so do your best to master everything: waves, tides, currents, salinity, pH, nitrogen cycles, rates, co-evaluations, differential equations, genetics, psychology, ecology, everything. very exciting and very relevant to understanding the ocean. Creativity is important. As much as science is seen as a cerebral endeavor of the left, it is not. Creativity is at the heart of science, as it is in marine biology. Discovery and intuition are essential in our search for truth in nature. After all, we only really like what we understand. Scientists don’t research to learn things, they know things to discover. The famous biologist E.O. Wilson said that the ideal biologist thinks like a poet but works like a bee. It is really difficult to make observations in nature, in the sea, but observation is the best way to understand the history of nature, which is necessary to make hypotheses and experimentally test our views. We throw our intellectual thoughts out into the world and see if they hold up. This is of course a creative process where imagination is more important than memorizing facts. While facts are important, being creative in science is much more important than you might think.
Skill up. To be successful in a competitive world, you need to stand out from the crowd. Most graduate students who apply to work with me have excellent grades, high GRE scores, and extensive research experience. What I notice is this extra skill or area of expertise that is unique. This is where those options or extra effort can pay off. I’m not talking about small or double large, most people honestly don’t care about those, including me. What matters is what you know and what you can do.
