What Does A Radiation Therapist Do & Other Radiation Therapy Questions

The radiation therapy program is accredited (8 years with the most recent accreditation award in 2015) and its curriculum meets standards published and monitored by the Joint Review Committee on Radiation Technology (JRCERT).

Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible for examination and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

The radiation therapy program is a rigorous six-semester commitment with a summer semester Students must demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom to treat patients in a clinical setting. Clinical education requires students to demonstrate competency, continued competency, and professional growth/professionalism at our designated radiation oncology centers. Faculty in the Radiation Therapy Program take a personal interest in each student’s success Students enrolled in the program receive a student handbook of policies and procedures, routine academic and career counseling, and tutoring available upon request.

Students must attend all didactic and clinical courses offered. The student schedule requires attending 8 consecutive two-hour clinics and three days of classes during the first year of the program. In the second year of the program, students attend three days (24 hours) per week in a clinical setting and two days in the classroom. Generally, didactic sessions take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and clinical sessions from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. On non-class days Some classes may be offered in the evening or online. Radiation Therapy As

Students are required to earn a grade of C or better in each class as published in the Radiation Therapy course to advance to the next academic semester.

During the two years, students are required to participate in experiences at various clinical sites Therefore, students must have reliable transportation to travel up to 50 miles for clinical education

Students must attend all class activities and clinical sessions as scheduled. Unfortunately, the program cannot accommodate students’ work schedules.

We will be the primary provider of radiation therapy specialist education based on best practice and research in radiation oncology.

The program has developed partnerships with medical institutions across the United States so that students develop expertise in a variety of settings and experience the breadth of opportunities available to become a certified radiation therapist. In the clinical phase, teaching, training and supervision are provided in affiliated hospitals and clinical laboratories.

Gwynedd Mercy University’s radiation therapy program is the first JRCERT-accredited baccalaureate degree program in the Philadelphia area. The Associate of Science degree is not offered at Gwynedd Mercy University, as the preferred degree is the Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy. We have a long tradition of educating radiation therapists who treat patients with dignity and respect.
