To earn a BSW degree, students must complete a minimum of 124 semester hours of directed study, which includes 38 semester hours of general education, 52 semester hours of major requirements, and 34 semester hours of general electives. Content subjects in the main requirement can be completed in three semesters (one calendar year), while the professional practicum is completed in one semester.
Through the Integrative Practice course, students engage in intensive clinical field practice consisting of 400 on-site hours in a social work setting.

Licensing of social work professionals is the responsibility of the Health Professions Council in each state. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require social workers who are graduates of a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to sit for the licensure exam. Because the university’s BSW program is accredited through CSWE, students and clients can rest assured that they are well prepared for professional social work practice.
While CSWE sets and maintains national standards for all social work programs, each state reserves the right to set its own standards for licensing to practice within state borders. The University operates under the NC-SARA GUIDELINES for determining physical presence in supervised field exercises for online students (Section 5.3). If the student does not intend to sit for the licensure exam, he or she may participate in the practicum in any US state or territory except the CNMI.* However, if the student intends to sit for the licensure exam and participates in the practicum as part of the licensing requirements in that country, there may be additional requirements from agency responsible for licensing.
