This study-based course consists of a series of projects of increasing complexity. It will give you an understanding of light and color, materials, space and volume. Projects range from designing temporary events to exploring the long-term reuse of buildings.

Year 1 introduces the principles of interior design. Recent projects include designing an event in a 17th century palace and the radical reuse of a former department store and disused steel factory.

The aim of this module is to introduce the principles of ideation and communication in interior design. You will undertake a series of projects, workshops, experiments and exercises to expand your knowledge, challenge preconceptions and stimulate confidence and risk-taking. You will be able to communicate this project work and other exercises appropriately using a range of newly acquired and developed visual communication skills. The focus in this module is on expanding creative perspective and approach and on developing core communication skills that support interior design practice.

This module introduces you to the complete process of interior design in context. It deals with the meaning of research, observation, documentation, evaluation, idea generation, concept development, iteration and communication. It also introduces you to core interior design considerations including proportion, ergonomics, scale, function, form, structure and spatial organization. The conscious awareness and practice of all aspects of the design process is intended as the means for the successful development of the work of the project from the beginning to the resolution.

The purpose of this module is to present the principle of the workshop and the studio as integrated creative environments for the interior designer. The workshop is seen as an extension of the design studio, with special facilities for special activities, for example, the 3D workshop and the digital media workshop. This principle is explored in the context of materials and construction and their effect on the interior through a series of projects centered on the physical (and digital) model. Digital modeling facilitates physical modeling which is used to explore materials and construction through scale representation and model attributes. Judgments are made on the aesthetics and communication of the model. The modeling process develops basic workshops and sharpens awareness of attention to detail.

Material characteristics and properties, manufacturing processes and technologies are also introduced and explored. The module equips you simultaneously with the key skills and knowledge of the subject context.

Through lectures, discussions and image-based study tours, this module presents a thematic history of designed spaces, particularly locating the emergence of the interior in modernity. Topics include: relationships between design practices and professions, relationships between politics, work, craft and technology, taste and display, consumption and design, and spatial concepts in architecture and beyond. Each session aims to address particular ideas and practices that have shaped our contemporary understanding of designed spaces as part of significant social, cultural and economic activity. The module engages with critical texts to enable students to examine the relationship between theory and practice, and to develop an understanding of how designed spaces emerge and are situated as cultural responses to modernity.

Year 2 focuses on interior design processes. Projects include the development of a hotel attached to the International Space Station and the restructuring of transport nodes in collaboration with Transport for London.

The aim of this module is to give students insight into professional practical issues and scenarios closely associated with interior design. The main areas covered center on selection and specification and project management. It is understood that one of the roles of the interior designer is to select and specify the furniture, fixtures and fittings (FFE) as well as lighting, color and finishes. These choices naturally have a huge impact on the interior space and must reflect sensitivity and adapt to the context. It is also understood that considerable effort has been made to formalize the practice of interior design and approach it in accordance with the recognized professional practice procedure, particularly exemplified by architecture. The practice of interior design is considered across the spectrum.

The aim of this module is to explore internal contexts in greater scope and detail through practical project work. The module is a natural continuation of the Level 4 (Year 1) Design Process Module. It intends to expand the perspective and increase the awareness of the theoretical positioning and recognize that the most interesting and resonant projects do not happen in isolation as hermetic events, but recognize their context and communicate the point of view contributing to a more comprehensive and wider discussion. thematic A number of different attitudes and approaches with clear parameters are offered depending on the context for example social, commercial, cultural, environmental, political. Explore these through practical project work, synthesizing all previous learning in the process and contextualizing your personal project vision and ambition.
