Marine biology students look forward to getting past Seattle’s rainy days and coming to the bay to explore its ecosystems and diverse habitats. In addition to majors in marine biology, UV also offers majors in oceanography and aquatic and fisheries sciences. In addition to its location on the shores of Puget Sound, UV also has a marine science field station, Friday Harbor Laboratories, located a few miles north of campus on San Juan Island. With connections to many experiential learning and research opportunities, UCLA students gain the experience they need to succeed in the workforce after graduation. “The UCLAMarine Biology Quarterly is a unique thing that UCLA is doing to advance students in the field of marine biology,” said senior Nuri Molina. All marine biology majors participate in MBK, a quarter spent designing and implementing their own research project under the guidance of faculty members. “I participated in the Marine Biology Quarterly in Australia, where we spent a few weeks studying the distribution of stingrays on North Stradbroke Island, and wrote a paper and presented it on Heron Island,” Molina said. MBK gives students a taste of what life is like in marine biology – something you may not experience at other schools.
What Degree Do You Need To Be A Marine Biologist?
UAS offers its marine science students more than just a BS in Marine Biology or Fisheries and Marine Science. Any student, regardless of marine biology background, can apply for the Undergraduate Research, Experience and Creative Activities (Eureka) program. Through URECA, students participate in creative extracurricular research that they design themselves and work under the guidance of the faculty. The university offers up to $2,500 in funding for any project (from creative writing to mapping to documentaries to regular lab research) if needed. Marine science students also have access to internships through their department. “There are many professors who offer research and internship opportunities here at UAS. Also, being so close to [the University of Alaska Fairbanks, College of Fisheries] gives students great opportunities to work with graduate students,” senior Madison Barkas said. Looking for something a little more specific than just “marine biology”? UNE also offers a BS or minor in Conventional Marine Biology and a BA or minor in Marine Affairs, a BS or minor in Aquaculture, a BS in Marine Entrepreneurship, and a program called MARMAT—a double major in marine science. UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences encourages you to explore the many layers and subsets of the ocean. In addition to their graduate programs in marine affairs, marine biology and ecology, meteorology, oceanography, and geological sciences, UM offers a double major in marine science. This program allows you to explore the interdisciplinary aspect of marine science by combining it with the subject that interests you the most: biology, chemistry, computing, geological science, microbiology and immunology, meteorology or physics. By studying marine science in the context of another subject, you open up your future to endless possibilities – we’re talking about anything from a hydrographer to an animal behaviourist to an environmental lawyer. CSU Monterey Bay students study marine biology next to one of the nation’s most dynamic bays. Monterey Bay, Monterey Canyon, one of the largest underwater canyons in the world (the Grand Canyon is underwater, but twice as deep), as well as many marine species – even gray and humpback whales. The Institute for Applied Marine Ecology is located at CSU MB. IfAME seeks to fill gaps in our understanding of human interactions with marine ecosystems. With five different labs, including the Seascape Ecology Lab and the Environmental Physiology Lab, IfAME not only provides CSU students with coveted research positions, but also a clear idea of how to use their knowledge to improve our planet—a pretty sweet deal . Beyond the classroom, the Marine Science Club brings students together for networking, shore cleanup days and bonfires on the beach.

Stony Brook marine science majors leave the classroom for a semester and spend it on the water instead with the Semester at Sea program. Students spend the semester at Stony Brook’s Southampton campus on Shinnecock Bay, trading their lecture notes for hands-on experience and working to strengthen their field skills on the water three to four days a week. “Our Marine Science Center [located on the Southampton campus] has research vessels that take classes on weekly trips to Shinnecock Bay, the Peconic River and the greater Atlantic Ocean,” said senior Courtney Stewart. “It gives us young marine scientists.”
