Colleges With Wildlife Biology Majors – Students in our undergraduate program take a core set of courses in wildlife ecology and management, as well as courses in basic science, natural resource management, math, and the liberal arts to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife ecology. Our program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to complete the course requirements for certification as a Wildlife Biologist or Fisheries Biologist through the Wildlife Society or the American Fisheries Society. We place a strong emphasis on fieldwork in our curriculum, using Maine’s diversity of ecosystems for teaching and demonstration purposes. While most students in our program aspire to become wildlife or fisheries biologists, conservationists, conservation biologists, or natural resource managers, students can also pursue other individual interests by choosing electives in areas of concentration such as environmental education , forestry and international conservation. Students may also pursue wildlife research under the guidance of a faculty member by participating in the University of Maine Honors Program or participating in independent study programs in our department. In addition, the faculty strongly believes that field or on-the-job experience promotes career advancement, and the faculty actively supports students in their search for internships or other employment opportunities. The Department of Wildlife Biology, Fisheries, and Conservation has an active wildlife research program that allows students to learn about the latest developments in wildlife ecology and management, with many opportunities for undergraduate employment or wildlife research experience.

Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology prepares students to manage and protect fish and wildlife populations in their natural habitats. This science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) major provides students with the skills needed to observe, study, monitor, and assess the impact of environmental change, human behavior, and public policy on animal populations. Using a combination of lab work, technology, and field research, students develop conservation strategies that ensure the long-term health of fish and wildlife populations.

Students have plenty of opportunities to get outside while studying fisheries, wildlife, and conservation biology. After their sophomore year, students spend six weeks onsite at Summer Camp, a unique experience for the College of Natural Resources, NC. During this unforgettable summer, students learn practical fish and wildlife management techniques at various locations across the state. From plant and animal identification and bird mist netting to camera traps and radio telemetry, students gain experience that prepares them for a career after graduation. Year-round class outings include behind-the-scenes explorations of the Smithsonian, animal autopsies at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, and overnight trips to the Smoky Mountains.

The student-run Leopold Wildlife Club and Student Fishing Society provide opportunities for professional development, networking and social events. With multiple natural resource agencies within 20 minutes of the NC State campus, students have access to many valuable internship opportunities. Students also gain hands-on work experience and internships at N.C. The Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh, the largest natural science museum in the Southeast, and NC. Wildlife Resources Commission, which is located on the NC State campus. They will design stakeholder engagement activities that will allow them to collect the data needed for analysis to define a management plan.

By exploring local communities, students are tasked with identifying different plants and making an inventory of what they find. After determining what wildlife is present, students create a management plan for their communities.

Although species such as ticks are found in all parts of the world, their survival needs vary greatly from place to place. Students will learn about the variety of species and compare them to the types of ticks that are found in their area. Students will learn how to deal with these different species.
