The Columbia Capstone Project is the final course for all Master’s students in strategic communication.
Working in teams, students develop and propose a fully developed communication solution for a real business problem or opportunity presented by the sponsoring organization. A capstone project gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of key strategic communication concepts and skills. Each team’s strategy defines the right target audience for communication, audience insight, persuasive messaging and creative campaign thinking, as well as strategic and channel recommendations to bring the campaign to life. Experienced teaching staff guides students in all phases of the project.

Institutions are screened by the program director and faculty and selected because the final participation meets the teaching requirements of the course. Capstone projects last the entire term. At the end of the semester, students will present a comprehensive and professional presentation and written report to their sponsors. Each sponsor will benefit from the research (focus groups and professional field surveys), analysis, audience insight, strategic thinking and creativity of one or possibly two student teams.
The capstone project is only offered in the summer and fall terms. Below are sample deadlines for each term.
January to April – Organizations explore project ideas with core teaching staff and submit a core project proposal form at the end of April – The program notifies the organization if they have been selected to participate as a core sponsor – Faculty form teams to match the projects May. By August – teams conduct project research, communicate with project manager and prepare final recommendations – mid-August teams recommend their communication strategies in live presentations (or online, depending on the COVID-19 situation) to sponsor representatives
