Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic The UD SLH Clinic exists to teach students how to translate cutting-edge research and practice into the next best research findings in practice. Our clinic is one of only a handful of university speech-language pathology clinics nationwide that participate in the National Association for Speech-Language and Hearing Outcomes Monitoring data. Located in the UD STAR Health Sciences Complex, the Speech-Language Clinic has 6 treatment rooms and a large group therapy area. In addition, our audiology suite offers a wide range of hearing diagnostic services. We are open to the public!

The University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders strives to develop and develop new areas of clinical research to enhance our programs. We invite applications and nominations for two full-time positions at the rank of Instructor / Assistant Professor.
Required areas of clinical research experience include motor speech disorders, voice and resonance disorders, and/or swallowing disorders. Selected candidates will begin establishing a new clinical research practice in their area of expertise with collaborative partners. These methods can serve as a catalyst for interest in advanced clinical practice and research. These are nine-month appointments starting in August 2023, with possible summer funding.

Shauna Huguley, Hannah Martin and Hilary Earp are second-year speech-language pathology students and 2022-2023 Scottish Medical and Clinical Research Scholarship recipients. Each is committed to contributing through research and service to their communities at the VA after completing their studies in speech-language pathology.
Dr. Shauna’s clinical service, overseen by Miller, seeks to educate families and caregivers about introducing new foods to children. His research is particularly concerned with the eating habits seen in picky eaters or children with autism. Shona became very interested in this field because her cousin was born with hearing loss and received early intervention. She saw how SLP affected not only her niece, but her parents as well, and she wanted to help others in the same way. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her dogs, cooking, shopping, and spending time with her family.

Hannah works with clinical supervisor Rachel Green to review current research related to self-regulation in children with communication disabilities. In addition, she uses her research to disseminate clinical self-regulation strategies to first-year students as they help RUSLHC clients manage their behavior and emotions during sessions. As a graduate student, Hannah says working with autistic children and their families is rewarding, but she enjoys her experience with patients for a lifetime. In her free time, she enjoys going to concerts, watching TV shows, reading, and spending time with her family.
Dr. The Hillary Project, led by Diane Miller, is designed to educate child care workers about the early detection and diagnosis of autism symptoms. They provide day care workers with tools and strategies to better serve their autistic clients. After seeing stroke patients in the hospital and the impact their SLPs had on their quality of life and well-being, Hilary changed her career path from respiratory therapy to speech pathology. In her free time, Hilary enjoys spending time with her family, taking her children to the playground, going to church, and playing tennis with her husband.
Dr. Keith is a professor in the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program at Gentry University. He has worked in the OT program for 10 years and has been an OT for 24 years. She works on demand at Lewis Gale Medical Center, providing functional visual skills assessments to post-stroke clients. As a professor, Dr. Gentry teaches a number of courses in research and neuroanatomy, which has led him to an invaluable collaboration with the COSD department. She provides OT services to clients receiving speech and language services with the University’s Brain Injury (RUBI) program.
When asked about his collaboration with the COSD department, Dr. Gentry said, “Take every opportunity to collaborate! Every individual discipline and provider has something unique to offer. That’s a beautiful thing! They say, ‘No man is an island, it’s true! When we collaborate, we (personally and professionally ) grow and develop a new appreciation for others. But beyond the benefits for our own growth, ultimately (which is the real reason for everything we do), our patients benefit from the cooperation of the care team by working with the common goal of supporting them. are enjoying the best in all disciplines. Welcome to the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program! We offer graduate degrees that focus on the study of all aspects of human communication, including the prevention and treatment of disorders across the lifespan. The programs offer extensive training and education in the individual processes of human communication (speech, hearing, language, literacy, bilingualism), human communication disorders, swallowing, and procedures for correcting such disorders. Graduates are prepared for positions in a variety of professional settings, such as educational institutions, community speech and language centers, rehabilitation centers, hospital clinics, private practices, state departments of education, health departments, federal agencies, and colleges and universities.
You have an M.S. and New York State initial or professional certification as a teacher of speech and language impairments.
*More than 90 percent of our students choose one of the first two options. The Bilingual Extension Certificate requires only one additional course.
