Welcome to the Sciences Communication and Disorders program! We offer degrees that focus on the study of human communication and the prevention and treatment of disorders in their lives. The programs provide training and advanced training in individual human communication processes (speech, listening, language, literacy and bilingualism), in human communication disorders and ways to overcome and eliminate these disorders. Graduates are prepared for jobs in various professional settings: educational places, community centers and Latin language centers, rehabilitation centers, hospital clinics, private practices, public departments of education, health departments, federal agencies, colleges and universities.
Earn an M.S. and New York State initial or professional certification as a teacher of speech and language disorders.
Become A Transformative Speech Language Pathologist Or Audiologist!
*More than 90 percent of our students choose one of the first two correctly. Only one additional course is required for bilingual certificate renewal.
** This option is only available to those who have worked in a NYS school for at least three years as a vocal language provider.
*** While all students graduate with the work required for the NYSED TSLD, few students choose to pursue a master’s degree in SLP.
The Bilingual Support Institute is designed for speech therapists who desire advanced training in providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services to bilingual patients/clients/students. This advanced program is offered in online and in-person classes.
Communication Sciences & Disorders (ma)
Our doctoral program is a research-based degree to train doctoral candidates to become productive scholars and teachers in their field. Students receive training and experience in all aspects of the research process, including research studies and data analyses, presenting and writing research, applying for funding, and integrating into the international scientific community personally and professionally for the field of study. All of our doctoral professors have strong research portfolios and are also board certified speech pathologists with research in various countries. Speech Language Pathology (ms)
Applicants must complete or be in the process of completing the required 25 hours of clinical observation completed by an ASHA-certified speech pathologist.
Official transcripts from all accredited US colleges and universities must be submitted. DO NOT submit transcripts for study abroad courses that are listed on a US college or university transcript. Please see our program page for CSDCAS information. All official transcripts must be sent directly to CSDCAS.
Foreign Transcripts: Applicants who did not receive an undergraduate degree in the United States must have their degree transcript evaluated by the Office of Education Services. This degree requires documentation of equivalency to a US degree. When requesting a transcript of the trial requesting a “subjective” evaluation with grades. Please allow additional time to process your application.
All applicants are asked to compose short essays that address the candidate’s skills and experience. The exact question to be addressed can be found in the CSDCAS application. Works must be submitted directly to CSDCAS.
How To Become A Speech Therapist: Step By Step Instructions
Three letters of recommendation are required for admission. College officers are preferred to provide these recommendations, but in-service or volunteer supervisors are also acceptable. Applicants will enter the names and contact information (including email addresses) of three (3) individuals into the CSDCAS online application. The application system will prompt the applicant to submit a reference letter and send it immediately to CSDCAS. Please see our program page for CSDCAS information.
Within a few days of starting the CSDCAS application, the University of Delaware Graduate Office will send you a link to an additional application that you will need to complete.
The Communication Sciences and Disorders program provides academic and clinical training aligned with a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. This program provides students with the introductory steps necessary to apply and the practical experience to apply for certification in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Graduates may also be eligible to apply for licensure as speech therapists in Delaware. The UD CSCD program is full-time and lasts two years, including two winter and one summer courses. Extraordinary graduation is not allowed.
The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive balance of academic and clinical experience that addresses all KASA 2020 requirements, and ASHA professional certification standards. The curriculum encourages students to explore professional learning either through clinical work, school assignments, or independent research. This option provides additional training in research experience for students participating in doctoral studies. Students entering the program with all prerequisite courses must complete one summer and one winter course within 21 months of 4 (academic semesters). Students who decide to write a thesis can extend the study program by one semester.
School Of Communication Sciences & Disorders
Basic concepts of clinical practice, including work delivery models, clinical decision making, diagnosis and assessment models, basic clinical data collection and measurement, treatment planning and professional writing. Evidence is required to discuss the practice as a clinical speech.
Assessment and intervention strategies for children from birth to 5 years of age with semantic, pragmatic and morphosyntactic receptive and expressive difficulties.
This course provides an overview of acquired neurogenic language disorders and the ways in which these disorders have been historically described and explained. The course provides insight into the neural basis for communicative behavior. Approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of language disorders in adults are discussed, from structural to functional models.
Current theoretical approaches to phonological analysis and typical phonological acquisition are applied to the assessment and intervention of children who have phonological disorders. Practice using formal and tacit methods of phonological analysis.
