Students are required to take courses in the first four semesters that prepare them for the general examination at the beginning of the fifth semester. Each sub-field requires methodology courses, research courses and core seminars for majors and minors and these should be included in the IPOS. The faculty advisor and the student will set deadlines for course completion and exams, keeping in mind the goal of being ready to take comprehensive exams at the beginning of the fifth semester at ASU.

Students are generally required to complete their required coursework within the first two years of the program. After the first two years, students enroll in a variety of credits, including research, independent study, reading and conference, and thesis hours. In the first semester, doctoral students must enroll in POS 598, a one-credit workshop in the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).

What Can You Do With A Political Science Degree?

A maximum of 12 credit hours of approved coursework outside the department may count toward the 84 credit hours required at ASU.

Course work in excess of the maximum of 12 credit hours may be taken outside the department with the permission of both the Director of Graduate Studies and the faculty advisor.

Upon approval by the student’s supervisory committee and the Graduate College, this program allows 30 credit hours from those previously awarded for a master’s degree to be used toward this degree. If students have not previously been awarded a master’s degree, 30 hours of coursework includes electives that fulfill the required 84 credit hours.

A formal oral dissertation defense and a comprehensive written review of the major and minor fields are required.

Concurrent degree programs are specially designed academic programs that offer high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to complete two separate but complementary undergraduate degrees simultaneously. Students must meet the minimum admission requirements for both programs and be accepted individually by colleges offering programs at both colleges simultaneously.

Students pursuing the same degree earn two different degrees and receive two diplomas. ASU offers students two ways to earn a degree simultaneously: choosing a predetermined combination or creating their own combination. Either way, the same degree allows students to pursue their own personal or professional interests.

Accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degree programs are designed for high-achieving undergraduate students to accelerate the completion of their master’s degree by combining undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework. These programs offer the same high-quality curriculum taught by ASU’s world-renowned faculty.

ASU students can accelerate their education by earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in less than five years (for some programs) or by earning a bachelor’s degree in 2.5 or 3 years.
