Easy Science Experiments For 4th Graders – Sometimes students mistakenly think that the density of an object is the same as its weight or mass. Instead, density refers to the mass of an object in a given volume. Two bodies of the same shape and size (volume), but different masses (for example, two spheres of the same size and different masses) have different densities. As a physical property of matter, density applies not only to solids, but also to liquids and gases. Mathematically, density is expressed as mass divided by volume. This means that the more mass an object or substance has in a given volume, the denser it is. The density of an object depends on the mass, size and location of its atoms. Other factors affecting density are air pressure and temperature.

When it comes to understanding density, “seeing” density effects can be a useful starting point. The following experiments allow students to observe that different materials or liquids have different densities and what this means when interacting with other materials and liquids.
Buoyancy is the ability of a submerged or partially submerged object to float in water, air, or another liquid. The net force on an object upstream of the surrounding water, air, or liquid depends on both the density of the object and the density of the surrounding medium. In the process of learning about Archimedes’ principle, students observe buoyancy and can experiment with the role of density.
The density of water, air and other substances plays an important role in the processes taking place on Earth. Density differences in air and water are a major factor in ocean currents and some weather patterns. By experimenting with liquids and air of different densities, students will also understand how delicate certain processes on Earth are.
