The best way to find the best match for your startup is to search the grants.gov database to see what funding is currently available and which is the best fit for your startup. Another thing you need to look out for when looking at government funding is that there are a lot of grants from the Small Business Association, or SBA. The SBA doesn’t actually manage the money — that’s done through partner organizations, such as community grants — but they act as an intermediary between the government and the partner credit union.

They operate business centers across the country where small business owners can get help getting started.

FAST currently offers $3 million in grants (up to $125,000 per applicant) for grants, financial support and technical assistance in next-generation research and development (R&D). They are particularly interested in women, socially/economically disadvantaged groups, and applicants from competing SBIR and STTR programs from underrepresented or rural areas.
The state offers small business grants in addition to federal small business grants. State grants are more specific than federal grants, and they often offer smaller grants. They also work with other federal and state grants, and many are matching grants, meaning you have to match the amount they give you.
So those are the downsides. But the big plus is that fewer people apply for state grants than federal minority grants, so if you find the right person, it can be a good deal. You can search for minority business grants in your state on major search engines.
You can also turn to the economic development office in your area for help. Managed by the Economic Development Agency, these offices assist small businesses with financing, technical assistance and other resources to help them grow. The SBA also operates Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) across the country. They are often hosted by top universities and economic development agencies, which share the cost with the SBA.
