Although I’ve taught at Georgetown for nearly 20 years, I’ve never heard students ask questions in class about the level of understanding each team displayed on Monday. And they do all this while the class is broadcast live to the world on Periscope and Facebook Live.

It is too early to say whether this war will become a historical turning point like the beginning of the Cold War, but it certainly has the potential. Liberal democracies may face not only Russia, but an autocratic bloc dominated by Russia and China. Beijing, although uncomfortable with the instability caused by the war, continues to support Moscow. The conflict in Ukraine has deep roots in history and national identity. How does the Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) prepare students for such complex international issues?
SFS provides an education based on history and comparative politics. Our faculty believes in providing students with the basic skills and knowledge they need to think conceptually about international issues in various fields and regions. Students graduate from SFS prepared to solve challenging problems in rigorous and systematic ways.
Challenges For Energy Security. Transatlantic Approach
You served on the National Security Council under two presidents in addition to teaching at SFS for over twenty-five years. How do these experiences inform your teaching?
The effect goes both ways. My background in academia gives me the ability to contribute in a political context because I can bring to the table extensive historical knowledge and studies of international political dynamics. My government experience informs my research and teaching by helping me better understand how policy is made and implemented. Like many of my SFS colleagues, I aim to keep a foothold in both academia and the policy community to bring scientific expertise to policy discussions and real-world experience in the classroom.
On February 25, you spoke at the SFS town hall where hundreds of students gathered to discuss the Russian invasion. What role do such meetings play in the SFS student experience?
I have only one other memory that rivals the emotional significance of the town hall: teaching a section of Introduction to International Relations shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Understandably, we were all deeply moved. Similarly, emotions ran high immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
