The Master of Science in Clinical Psychology/Counseling is a 63-71 semester program designed to develop practical skills in counseling, through supervised training and experience, as well as knowledge and understanding of relevant subject matter and research methodology. The program culminates in a thesis or comprehensive examination and an internship experience. Students receive close one-on-one mentoring as only 10 to 15 students are admitted each year. The MS program operates a psychology clinic on campus for clinical training purposes. Courses and other program requirements are listed here.
For licensure in California as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) established by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Licensure as an MFT in California allows individuals to work in clinical and community mental health settings, engage in private practice for third-party reimbursement, and, after two years of licensure, supervise MFT trainees and interns. Additionally, the high standards maintained for licensure in California mean that other states with master’s level consulting licenses can recognize the MFT for purposes of reciprocity. Additionally, the clinical/counseling program has a proven track record of preparing students who later enter doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology.
Counseling Psychology Careers And Training
Some financial aid resources are available to our graduate students. Several assistantships are available each year in the second year of training, and some teachers have grants to employ research assistants. Some second-year internships offer a stipend. Student loans, offered through the Secured Student Loan (GSL) program, may be available if you are accepted into the program. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships on campus at (909) 537-5227 in advance (ie, before March) to inquire about these loans and other aid opportunities.
Applicants should use the Cal State application website to apply to the M.S. in the clinical/consulting program. Follow the instructions on the Department of Psychology Graduate Admissions website. Please note that the MS Clinical/Counselling application requires an unofficial transcript(s), three letters of recommendation, and a two-page personal statement, which the applicant should include: Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs that accept less than 12% of students who apply (APA Graduate Studies in Psychology Summary Report, 2017). Given the highly competitive nature of doctoral admissions, students often choose to first complete master’s degree programs in counseling psychology, where they can develop the professional identity and skills necessary to be accepted into a doctoral program in counseling psychology.
The University of Kentucky’s Master of Science (M.A.) is a two-year, full-time (12 credits per fall/spring semester), 48-credit terminal graduate program that provides students with a specifically designed comprehensive and foundational education to prepare students to successfully apply to doctoral programs in counseling psychology.
Students graduating from our M.S. applicants to doctoral programs have a strong track record (89% success rate) in receiving offers of admission to doctoral programs in psychology and/or PsyD.
Reasons To Become A Clinical Psychologist
The philosophy of the program is rooted in the values and goals of a socially just society. A socially just society depends on the optimal health and well-being of all people in that society. People’s health and well-being depend on access to healthy environments that support healthy development and functioning. We seek to train future mental health professionals who enable optimal well-being and the transformation of unhealthy and oppressive social structures through engagement with science and practice.
The program is not intended for individuals who may wish to discontinue their undergraduate degree after obtaining a master’s degree (for example, for individuals who wish to obtain master’s level licensure as a mental health counselor or psychological associate in order to provide psychological health services to customers). Students who may wish to become licensed therapists/counselors at the master’s level should consider other programs, such as the UK’s CACREP-accredited 60 credit hour Master of Counseling program.
Through rigorous coursework, supervised clinical practice, and research laboratory involvement, our students learn the research, psychotherapy, professional, and cultural humility skills needed to succeed in advanced doctoral studies. Students receive doctoral preparation mentorship from faculty and doctoral students throughout the two years of the program to help students learn the “hidden curriculum” (ie, unspoken rules and norms) for doctoral admissions, succeeding in school specialization and create a sustainable career path in counseling psychology. Students receive tailored feedback on their PhD application materials and interview skills to help them make the right impression during the PhD application process.
To keep class sizes small, we accept a limited number of students each year. This provides an excellent student-faculty ratio (4 students to 1 core counseling psychology faculty member), which is an important metric to consider when choosing a master’s program.
Counseling & Clinical Psychology
To ensure the highest quality of education, students complete the program on-site in Lexington, KY, where they work face-to-face with faculty. The program cannot be completed part-time or through online distance learning.
There are on-campus funding opportunities (eg, graduate assistantships) available for M.S. students through the UKJobs website (https://ukjobs.uky.edu/postings/search). During 2020-2022, an average of 70% of our M.S. students were able to secure full-time funding (eg, 20 hours/week graduate assistantship providing full tuition remission, monthly stipend [minimum $14,520 for 9-month assistantship], student health insurance plan). This percentage is higher than the percentage of many mental health master’s programs across the country (be sure to ask each program you apply to about this percentage so you can factor it into the admissions decision-making process).

In general, students entering the master’s program have completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related discipline (eg, sociology, pre-med). GRE scores are optional. No minimum or cutoff GRE score is required.
Applications for admission are evaluated by program faculty who carefully examine (a) the applicant’s GPA; (b) GRE scores, if provided; (c) letters of recommendation regarding academic, research and consulting experience and interpersonal skills; (d) corresponds to the doctoral readiness emphasis of the program; (e) A mission statement that describes professional goals (ie, is commensurate with our training model and social justice values and demonstrates excellence in written communication); and (f) contribution to diversity, broadly defined to include individual social identities and backgrounds. Program faculty holistically review a potential student’s entire application and make decisions based not only on numerical criteria, but also on perceived fit with program goals, needs, and values. Thus, a low score in one area can be compensated by professional strengths in another area. The minimum GPA is >2.75 for undergraduates and >3.00 for graduates. The minimum TOEFL score is 79. It is essential that students express in their mission statement how their career goals align with the emphasis of the doctoral program.
