Created by Associate Professor Nadine Gaab, the two courses, Serving Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities: Creating Policy and Systems at the Translation and Coordination Level and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities: A Vision for Community Support and Service Implementation, are designed to provide students’ opportunity to challenge and redesign the current landscape of special education.

“I created these two new modules to fill a gap in terms of policy making and system-level translation in educational learning disability settings as well as community settings,” Gaab said. “The goal is for students to become change makers at the micro and macro levels and leave feeling empowered.

In the first module, students discussed why individuals who work with SLD students, from special educators to speech and language pathologists to pediatricians, are often silenced in their approach to care and envisions practical solutions for more coordinated efforts. In the second module, students develop ways to support SLD students outside the classroom through interventions and solutions at the community level.

In addition to his academic research, Gaab is also an entrepreneur, developing new EdTech tools for screening reading difficulties such as dyslexia through his company EarlyBird Education. Gaab said she wants students to step out of their comfort zone and think about applying their learning in practical ways that can lead to real-world solutions.

“In the first part of the module, I want them to walk away with pitches that they can apply to all these challenges they’re learning. For the other module, which is aimed at community stakeholders, I want them to think about how they can present their ideas at the local level, facing mayors or school committees,” said Gaab.

Working in small teams, students develop an innovative project blueprint to address a specific challenge by using a variety of interventions, from an app that connects volunteer advocates of special education families to help navigate the IEP process to a campaign to raise awareness about learning. differences in rural China.

Lexi Iverson, Ed.M.’21, created an app to close the gap between general educators and special educators. As a former middle and high school special education teacher and department head, Iverson knows the challenges that exist firsthand.

Growing up with a learning disability herself, Julia Travostino, Ed.M. ’21, I’ve seen how frustrating it can be to navigate diagnoses from a student’s perspective. Travostino and his project partner came up with the idea for a web-based communication platform to provide resources directly to children with disabilities.

“When it comes to disability, kids deserve to know and learn about their brains—after all, their disability will affect them the most,” Travostino said. “Websites and books aimed at caregivers tend to talk about children and ignore the fact that they are the person living with this disability.”

Gaab said he was impressed with all the pitches and saw many of them being implemented and having an immediate impact. Students say they leave the class not only with their pitches fully developed and understanding how to approach potential funders, but also feeling empowered to make system-level change.
