The School of Visual Arts (SVA) opened in 1947 with just three teachers and 35 students (most of them World War II veterans). Known as the School of Painters and Illustrators, the school employed New York City art professionals as its art faculty—a practice that continues to this day.

SVA currently serves 7,000 students enrolled in 31 programs. Offerings for emerging graphic designers include a BFA in Design and a Design/Designer as Entrepreneurial MFA. The BFA program is “an interdisciplinary education program in itself, offering a variety of degrees including Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Interaction Design and 3D Design,” the school said.
The program can also be divided into package design, layout design, information graphics, corporate identity, publication design, CD packaging, book jacket design, environment design and website design. The Designer/Designer As Entrepreneur MFA “inspires” students to imagine, produce, brand and market their own creative content. Interaction, animation, branding and user experience are covered alongside typography as a visual language, video and new media directions as well as art books and digital publishing. Students will also take classes in business, marketing, ethnography, strategy, research, marketing, promotion, intellectual property and networking.
The MFA program includes “advanced education in various creative skills, such as writing, editing, criticism, visual language writing, Film Directing and new media, visual journalism and book and magazine publishing,” in the first year. Students will also take courses in marketing, research, advertising, promotion, advertising, intellectual property and networking. In the second year of the program, students will design and write a product proposal that will be presented to a panel of “guest talent” who will determine whether it has sufficient merit to proceed to the development stage. In this section, “students will produce prototypes for sponsors, publishers, manufacturers or distributors. The New School was founded in 1896 as The Chase School by American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. In 1904, Art Instructor Frank Alvah Parsons joined the school, later becoming its sole director. The School of Arts, Media and Technology offers several degree programs for aspiring graphic designers including AAS, BFA and MPS degrees in Communication Design. The School of Continuing Technical Education offers a Certificate in Graphic and Digital Design. The curriculum for the credit-hour AAS program in Communication Design (formerly known as Graphic Design) is “based on typographic and interaction design for print and digital media, combining community- and technology-driven design approaches,” the school said. A one-year, 30-credit hour MPS program offers a concentration in Digital Product Design. This degree program “combines education in advanced interaction design with coursework that improves your user experience, design thinking and collaboration skills.” Students will graduate with “industry-ready conceptual and advanced development skills and a network of design professionals to help them” “advance or enter rapidly growing fields.”

Founded in 1887, Pratt Institute is located in the historic Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The school, which prepares its nearly 5,000 students for careers in architecture, art, design, information science and the liberal arts, as well as liberal arts and sciences, offers more than 25 bachelor’s degree programs and concentrations and more than 26 graduate degree programs. In addition to the Brooklyn campus, programs are offered at campuses in Manhattan and Utica, New York.
