The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) has a Department of Graphic Design that offers BFA and MFA degrees in Graphic Design. One of the school’s largest departments, RISD Graphic Design serves 165 students. Undergraduates have the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and work in specialized studios, including the Design Center’s Graphic Design Studios and Graphic Design Type Shop.

Graphic Design Course & Program

RISD’s Graphic Design BFA is a four-year program that focuses on project-based learning. Students can expect to work on projects covering book design, UX design, packaging, film graphics and more. The event attracts visitors, critics and designers from different parts of the world. During the junior and senior years of the program, BFA students have the opportunity to complete professional work.

Through electives and workshops, students work in various areas of graphic design during the final year of the program. All Graphic Design BFA students complete an independent degree project to graduate. Critics are invited to review completed projects.

The Rhode Island School of Design’s MFA in Graphic Design has two tracks: a two-year track in graphic design for students with a bachelor’s or related degree and a three-year optional degree for individuals with a liberal arts, science, or fine arts background. Both tracks allow students to customize the curriculum with cross-disciplinary electives. The two-year track includes first-year graduate seminars, graphic design studies, electives, and studios. In the second year, students complete postgraduate studies.

In the three-year track, students take electives, seminars, and graduate courses in the history of type design, typography, and graphic design in the first year. The second and third years consist of studios, seminars, electives and a thesis.

All Graphic Design MFA students share individual workspaces in a large design studio in RISD’s Center for Integrative Technologies (CIT), which houses several graduate programs and a graduate student gallery.
