Last year, Mankiw announced that students in an introductory college economics course must purchase access to an online learning platform that costs about $132 to access required assessment materials, problem sets and quizzes. Although Mankiw said at the time that he negotiated a lower price for the course, many students criticized the move, arguing that the materials were too expensive for the popular introductory course.

This year, 633 students studying 10th year of Economics still have to buy a course package. But in the course syllabus, Mankiw wrote that he would now “donate all royalties earned from purchases of these materials by Ec 10 students.”

Mankiw also noted in the syllabus that the course package also includes 10 second-semester materials in economics at a cost of approximately $66 per semester.

Still, some current Ec 10 students said they felt the required course package — which cannot be resold — was too expensive for the course, a gateway to the economics department and other social science concentrations.

After Ec 10 mandated a $132 course package, the Undergraduate Education Committee added a question about the cost of course materials to the Q Guide.

“I think it’s important to see things in perspective. We’ve already paid almost tens of thousands of dollars for an education at Harvard,” Wang said. “I think if you’re here at Harvard and you’re getting the best of Harvard and it costs $100 more, so be it.”

Thomas H. Baranga, the course’s principal section leader, acknowledged in an email that “MindTap’s software is not perfect,” but wrote that he believed most of the issues had been resolved.
