I couldn’t figure out how to create a secure wireless network with WPA or WPA2 between the iMac, two laptops and an iPhone…

HP Compaq 6820s, Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.6GHz, with Vista (I have to apologize for this, but it’s a working vista/phone slimmed down, I’m too lazy to update)

Create A Mylio Hotspot On Macos

I want to create an Ad-Hoc network on my iMac to connect all my devices. But I can only create a WEP encrypted network, and if people can crack it in less than 2.5 minutes, it’s not secure.

And if I create an adhoc network with WPA2/AES on my Vista machine, that’s all I can do in Vista, none of my devices can connect to it, they see the network, but it says “wrong password”. And I know I spelled the password correctly on both ends…

So I’m clueless! I know if I get a WiFi AP Router it will solve my problem, but my room and desk are cluttered as it is now, so if I can run it on an AdHoc network I’ll be great…

Thanks for reading and maybe you can put me out of my misery because this problem is just killing me!

Mesh Networks And Firechat Make ‘switching Off The Internet’ That Much Harder

I don’t believe Macs can create ad networks using anything other than WEP. You are right, this is a serious problem and we hope they add encryption protocol support to Snow Leopard. However, there should be no problem connecting to the Windows share.

BlueRevolution, I would like to add that when trying to connect to a WPA2/AES AdHoc network created in Vista, there is a strange line in the Console Messages/Logs:

Weekend Learning: An Ad Hoc Way To Add New Arsenal

But as I write here, I think it’s nothing more than Leopard not properly supporting WPA2 in AdHoc mode!

Given that Apple didn’t finish implementing security until the final “standard”, I think they did the same thing with Bluetooth as the iPhone (but there are alternatives). But it doesn’t use Bluetooth…

Thanks for the posts guys, I guess I should back up the router for extra security!
