The 10 Highest Paying Jobs You Can Get Without A College Degree
If you can’t work well with other people, you’re better off in a job that doesn’t require people skills.
To find these jobs, we averaged data from the Occupational Information Network, or O*NET, a US Department of Labor database that contains details on more than 900 occupations.
O*NET rates each occupation on a scale of 0 to 100 based on how much the job requires workers to interact with other people and how much the job requires workers to communicate with others. We average these ratings to determine which jobs have the lowest scores.
While we are not saying that everyone in these roles is indifferent, according to O*NET, the following jobs pay an average of more than $55,000 per year, require an average social skills score of 65 or less, and therefore require at least good – natural communication with others.

The good news is that while wage growth remains sluggish, the pressure to find highly qualified candidates with specific skills is driving up wages for Ireland’s best-paid workers. Recruiters report pressure on some underserved industries, which in turn increases wages and compensation packages in the candidate market. “Attracting senior executives is becoming increasingly competitive in some industries, and as a result, the salary base is rising. Executives want a good financial relationship, but make sure the company culture is right for them,” said Caitriona Lannen of Executive Jobs.
The pressure to find high-quality candidates with specific skills is driving up wages for high-paying jobs in Ireland.
Eileen Moloney of Brightwater Recruitment says: “If you look at insurance and financial services, the salaries of actuaries are very high.”
The Riddle Of The Well Paying, Pointless Job
A principal actuary can earn up to €300,000 a year and a senior actuary around €160,000. And the mix of abilities, that’s where you’re going to see the pressure points,” said Robert Mac Giolla Phadraig of Sigmar Recruitment.
In IT, you’re looking for professionals who can change quickly, adapt to the market and spot the next big thing, Moloney says. A chief technology officer earns around 120,000-170,000 euros a year, and recruitment consultants say this number can be much higher. This is in addition to packages that may include car benefits and matching rewards. “We see an advantage in skill sets, for example technical skill sets around development and some of the newer software development languages. These languages are highly valued because they are emerging,” Mac Giolla Fadraig said.
In financial services and banking, risk and compliance functions can also command the salaries expected of senior actuaries, says Morgan McKinley’s Treyk Kivans. A head of compliance is expected to earn €160,000, and staff involved in professional risk advisory services will earn the same amount. “What we’re seeing, not just in Ireland but across the global economy, is that financial services and banking functions need more scrutiny because of everything that’s happened in the past,” he said. “If anything, regulation will increase and companies will have to have appropriate positions in these areas, driving up demand and thus wages.”
The tech industry is also leading the way in offering stock as part of compensation packages. The stock option scheme meant that many employees were able to double their income over three years with a single transaction. “That’s a big part of the incentive, having stock options and company rights. Depending on the industry and the company, that can happen at entry level from junior to senior,” Kivans said. Senior executives now see the equity generated by stock options as an additional income opportunity and this element of their compensation package as savings they won’t pass up.

In law and accounting, those who reach partner level can earn up to €250,000 per year with a package and shares as part of the deal. “In accounting firms and law firms, particularly small and medium-sized firms, the partnership model is suitable for profit-sharing, stock-sharing, or dividend compensation structures. Large firms have two tiers, so many partners are equity partners. And many newer partnerships can to have more titles than partners in the sense of profit,” said Mac Giolla Phadraig.
In the legal field, the arrival of multinational corporations, which often use their in-house legal functions as part of their Irish operations, has opened up new opportunities for lawyers.
An in-house legal officer can now earn around €200,000 to €300,000 a year, plus packages. Kivans said that while lawyers can earn higher salaries, it is also possible for accountants to move into other areas such as treasurer, treasurer or chief financial officer and earn between 180,000 and 250,000 euros.
Another sector that has also experienced great growth in Ireland is engineering, with recruitment consultants naming it as one of the most in-demand sectors for professionals this year. “The pharmaceutical, medical device and food industries are all in high demand for engineers and software engineers. Starting salaries for chemical, quality and process engineers from university graduates start at €32.
