Journalism & Mass Communication Participates In Career & College Fair At Sunshine Worldwide

The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication is the journalism unit of the University of Oklahoma in Norman. The college is named after the longtime publisher of The Oklahoman.

In 1897, five years after the University of Oklahoma opened, the first student newspaper, The Umpire, was launched. In 1903 it became a weekly news publication called University Oklahoman. As a result, in 1916 the newspaper adopted the name it still has today, The Oklahoma Daily.

Due to the need for professional training, some of The Umpire’s staff requested an introductory newspaper class. This first journalism course, titled glish 33, was placed in the glish department as a one-semester, two-credit course. Taught by Jerome Dowd, professor of sociology/economics, and Theodore Brewer, director of the English department. Since both had worked at newspapers before becoming professors, Dowd as an editor and Brewer as a staff member, they were able to teach the first class of eight students well. By 1910 Mr. Brewer became the only teacher.

By 1912, as the demand for more classes increased, Professor Brewer realized the need for a complete journalism school. This need was also recognized by OU President Stratton D. Brooks, who applied to the State Board of Education for a separate journalism school.

Professor Theodore Brewer has been named the founding director of the new School of Journalism, making him, along with Jerome Dowd, the first two faculty members.

The first permanent building for journalism was Copeland Hall, built in 1958. It remained at Copeland Hall until the opening of Gaylord Hall in 2004.

Previously H.H. Known as the Herbert School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Gaylord family donated $22 million to the university in 2000. As such, the school was elevated to collegiate status, and the college and facilities were in return condemned in favor of the Gaylord family. Gaylord Family is a former longtime publisher of The Oklahoman, which was sold in 2011.
