Master Degree In Community Development – Using a social work lens, you will explore policy, practice and ethical approaches to working with diverse populations in global and local contexts. You will analyze the social forces, structures, systems and international institutions that give rise to different models of social development. You will explore and develop skills in alternative intervention strategies and techniques. Our graduates have gone on to work in international and Canadian settings working with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, Canadian development agencies and immigrants.

This flexible program is offered mostly online, with a mix of real-time and asynchronous learning. You will need to attend three residence halls on our Calgary campus. You must also complete 500-hours of study (full-time) in the final year of your program.

KOICA and Scholarship Program Part I KOICA and Scholarship Program The Korea International Cooperation Agency was established on April 1, 1991 as a government agency to enhance the effectiveness of Korea’s grant-in-aid programs for developing countries through implementation. Grant-in-Aid and Technical Cooperation Program of Govt. In the past, development cooperation efforts focused on meeting the basic human needs (BHN) of developing countries and promoting their human resource development (HRD). However, the focus has now shifted to promoting sustainable development, strengthening partnerships with developing partners and strengthening local ownership of beneficiaries. In addition, global issues such as environment, poverty reduction, gender mainstreaming and population have gained significant importance in donor countries. With ever-changing trends in development assistance efforts and practices, KOICA strives to adapt to these changes by effectively utilizing its limited financial resources in areas where Korea has a comparative advantage. In particular, as Korea has a unique experience of developing from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the most economically developed countries, this knowledge is an invaluable asset that effectively assists KOICA in its partner’s sustainable socio-economic development. 5 Part I. KOICA and Scholarship Program Korea’s ODA Program Official Development Assistance (ODA) consists of grants or soft loans to developing countries to promote economic development and welfare. Korea’s ODA is classified into three areas: 1) bilateral aid (grant assistance and technical cooperation), 2) bilateral loans, and 3) financial contributions and contributions to international organizations (multilateral). Bilateral assistance includes technical cooperation and various types of transfers (cash, goods or services) without obligation of reparation and is conducted by KOICA under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Bilateral loans are provided on concessional terms under the name Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), which is implemented by the Export-Import Bank of Korea under the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. Multilateral aid is provided in the form of financial subscriptions or contributions to international organizations. Information about the program 3

KOICA and Scholarship Program The Korean Experience and KOICA Human Resource Development Program Human resource development (HRD) has been the most important factor in Korea’s exit from the vicious cycle of poverty and underdevelopment that has existed for decades. Due to limited natural resources, HRD has played an important role in the development of modern Korea. It is clear that Korea has become an exemplary example of national development due to the development of human resources. Through its own development experience, Korea has fully understood the importance of HRD, especially in relation to Korea’s cooperation with other developing countries. With extensive experience and knowledge in the field of human resources, Korea can contribute greatly to the international community by sharing its unique development experience with other countries. Since its establishment in 1991, KOICA has supported various international cooperation programs for human resource development, primarily in the form of project assistance focused on education and vocational training with an emphasis on building foundations for human resource development. Training and exchange programs help our partner countries develop administrative and technical skills in both the public and private sectors. To share experiences on a wider scale, under the name World Friends Korea, KOICA sends volunteers from Korea abroad to provide services in areas such as education, regional development, information technology, health care, and patient care. Around 7,806 volunteers have been deployed in 57 countries so far. The course provides an opportunity for individuals from developing countries to gain first-hand knowledge of Korea’s development experience. The goal of the program is to enable participants to apply what they have learned to the development of their home country or local community. Since 1991, KOICA has offered 3,106 courses to 49,020 participants from 173 countries. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects including administration, economic development, science and technology, information and communication technology, agriculture and health.
