Master Of Health Professions Education – Our Master of Health Education program is unique in Canada: there is no other program available in the health education community (dentists, doctors, nurses, nutritionists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, public health professionals, veterinarians, etc.). course and competency based.

This course is an introduction/foundation to the MSc in Health Professional Education offered through the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University. Because the health professions are collaborative in nature, this master’s course will include content prepared by faculty spanning disciplines that will provide an overview of each health subject/major. This approach allows students to view the subject from multiple perspectives and is consistent with a competency-based model where students master a variety of health professions throughout the course and program.

This course presents a range of theories and approaches to curriculum development, such as competence-based education and outcomes-based education. The conference will be based on literature but based on activities and discussions that expect a high level of collaboration and participation. This course emphasizes the importance of curriculum alignment, including connections between learning outcomes/goals, delivery of instruction, and assessment and evaluation of learning. The aim of the curriculum is to reflect on the importance of designing and developing positive learning environments to support learning in health education environments. The course is designed to balance theory and practice and promote conceptual and skill development.

HPE 803 is designed to provide students with a foundation for engaging in scholarship across a variety of disciplines, ontologies, and pedagogies. The course covers a variety of scholarly methods, including an overview of literature search strategies, the use of conceptual frameworks, and a critical evaluation of the validity and reliability of scholarly conclusions drawn from data analysis.

To provide the best possible patient care, healthcare teams need to adopt collaborative approaches to teaching, learning and communication. This course will explore best practices, content delivery strategies, assessment, and evaluation methods to facilitate learning for students at various levels of health care. This course will explore common challenges such as communication and leadership styles, self-awareness, presentation, and dealing with difficult learners.

This course aims to provide healthcare educators with a comprehensive introduction to simulation. The history of simulation and the theories and pedagogical systems that underpin simulation-based education are explored. The components of simulation design and how they affect learning will be explored and implemented. Further discussion on the role of simulation in competency assessment, licensing, certification and research.

This course provides an introduction to Indigenous people in health care for professional health educators. 22, 2015 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, “We call on those who can make a difference in Canada’s health care system to recognize the value of Aboriginal healing practices and use them collaboratively in the treatment of Indigenous patients.” With Aboriginal doctors and elders at the request of Aboriginal patients. This course will provide health professional educators with an overview of teaching from an Indigenous perspective, as well as information on how to teach others within the context of clinical education.

This course provides an introduction to health care leadership for health professional educators. The changing needs of the healthcare system require strong leaders to drive change and innovation. Course participants will be introduced to many concepts important to healthcare leadership, including principles of change and innovation, conflict mediation, leadership traits, strategic planning, and design. Through readings, case studies, and individual and group activities, students will gain valuable skills and perspectives on health education leadership and apply their knowledge to a variety of professional settings. Through a variety of engagement and reflection opportunities, participants gain insight into their own strengths and challenges in order to make the best use of their leadership potential.

The focus of this course is on the integration, implementation and application of scholarship. The training will be led by a lecturer from Queen’s University or a practice-based mentor. Students will decide on their project by the end of the first year, so that there will be enough time to complete the project at the end of the program if ethical or administrative approval is required.

The MHPE program fostered a highly collaborative and interprofessional environment that allowed for rich faculty and peer learning. I had a great support network of colleagues and teachers which developed into lifelong friendships and future collaborations. Our students are health professionals in or preparing for educational leadership roles in academic institutions, health care organizations, professional societies, and international health agencies. Students acquire the knowledge and skills to design and implement evidence-based educational programs, lead change in their institutions and organizations, and contribute to the advancement of HPE.

MHPE students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become HPE leaders and scholars, and develop skills in the following areas:

• Key concepts and theories of education, including curriculum development and implementation; instruction and learning; performance evaluation; and program evaluation

• ACY leadership, including organizational analysis and using tools to assess, manage and manage individual and organizational change in ACY contexts

• ACY scholarship, including using scholarship and evidence to inform management and educational practice; formulating research questions and determining appropriate methods for investigating them; literacy in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods

• Communication and collaboration, including oral and written communication; teamwork; giving and receiving feedback; and providing and seeking mentorship

The program is offered in two formats: an intensive on-site (on-campus) option (2 weeks for each core course and 1 week for electives) or a long-term online option (semester courses ranging from 8 to 15 weeks). Students in both formats attend a 1-week on-campus orientation session together to familiarize themselves with the core course content and faculty, and begin to develop the peer relationships that underpin collaborative collaboration. The Hybrid Accelerated Option is available to a limited number of students who reserve their time for the program so that all core courses can be completed in one year.

Graduates complete 32 credit hours, including 5 required core courses (18 credits), 3 or 4 electives (6-8 credits), and a thesis (6-8 credits).

Medical Education And Elearning Portfolio: January 2016

The culmination and hallmark of the MHPE journey is the recommended thesis. Working closely with a DME faculty thesis supervisor and review committee, students embark on an intensive research project that uses MHPE program courses to address local educational needs and questions, or to fill broader gaps in the academic literature.

At the beginning of March, students will be notified of their application decision. A 1 week introductory course is held on site (MHPE 505) at the end of July.

A successful application will provide strong evidence of the applicant’s potential for success in the MHPE program, including evidence of interest and participation in educational programs, initiatives, and projects. The admissions committee evaluates each application based on merit, leadership potential, and communication skills. Given the diversity of candidates, a candidate’s strengths can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. Applicants are evaluated based on their career stage, expertise and professional standards. Although significant participation in scholarly works and educational initiatives may be a reasonable indicator of success in a program, it is not a mandatory requirement.

After applying, students are asked to select their preference for on-campus or online participation. Priority is given to students registering for courses in the format of the program in which they are enrolled.
