How To Become A Psychologist
Master’s level psychologists provide psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and other professional functions in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, private practices, psychiatric hospitals, and various types of residential treatment centers. In addition to preparing you for master’s degree licensure, the program also prepares you for future doctoral studies.
The program consists of 61 credit hours of coursework in the areas of assessment, psychological interventions, research methodology, and supervised practicum and internship. The program can be completed in two years of regular study.
The clinical psychology graduate program offers two separate majors. Each track has a slightly different area of focus, with different career goals, and therefore has slightly different tracks and course sequences.

Counseling Psychology Vs. Clinical Psychology
The professional development track is designed for students who may value research but do not want to pursue it. Instead, these students may want to begin clinical practice right after their master’s degree. Click here for professional development tracking courses and sequence.
As a student in the Clinical Psychology program, you will have the opportunity to gain extensive experience in the application of supervised mental health services. The required 15 credits of practicum and internship are designed to provide you with hands-on experience and professional skills, along with exposure to the organization and structure of mental health agencies. During your first year of study, you will complete an on-campus internship in Health and Wellness Services, which serves as an on-campus counseling center for the university. Health and Wellness Services, staffed by clinical psychology faculty members, provides a therapeutic experience for students and adults.
After completing the on-campus practicum, you will complete a 600-hour internship at an off-campus mental health agency under the supervision of a qualified psychologist. Internship opportunities are offered at local mental health centers, state hospitals, adolescent treatment centers, and chemical dependency programs. Teaching assistants are not available during the internship semester.
The clinical psychology program is designed to last two years. The program consists of approximately three semesters of coursework and one semester of internship (see course sequence above). Upon completion of the program, students graduate with a master’s degree in psychology (clinical emphasis) and qualify for licensure in Kansas.

Graduates of the program have been highly successful in employment in community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, and various types of treatment facilities. The Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board licenses master’s degree psychologists in the state of Kansas.
The completed file must be submitted to the Graduate School by March 15 for consideration for acceptance into the fall program.
