The Master of Reading and Literacy, Reading and Reading Advanced Authorization (RLAA) and Reading and Reading Leadership Specialist Credential (RRLSC) programs are designed to increase the understanding, knowledge and skills of those who are or wish to become reading arts/language arts specialists in public or private schools, clinics, and community colleges. Our programs are also ideal for elementary and middle school teachers who plan to stay in the classroom but want to deepen their theoretical and practical understanding of reading and language arts instruction. Candidates are prepared to teach, tutor, develop curriculum, provide service learning, and lead reading centers for students ranging from Pre-K to community college. The Master’s Degree in Reading and Literacy is often earned concurrently with the RLAA and RLLSC.

Special Education Literacy Degree (m.a.)

This program is the only one at SDSU that allows students to earn an RLAA or Pre K-12 RLLSC from the California Commission on Teacher Accreditation, either alone or in combination with a Masters in Reading.

Each of our programs (RLAA, RLLSC, and MA) offers extensive, collaborative, and supervised clinical experiences as educators work directly with K-12 students in the context of their local community. All graduate reading and literacy students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with SDSU Literacy Center students (subject to COVID-19 restrictions) during the spring semester each year. The degree and/or certificate option you pursue will depend on your personal and professional background, as well as your future career plans.

The RLAA provides additional expertise and authority in literacy instruction, preparing you to teach literacy more effectively in the classroom and to take on additional school-level roles in literacy leadership. The RLAA program can be completed in 12 consecutive months – beginning in the summer sessions and continuing through the fall and spring semesters.

The RLLSC program is a pre-K through adolescent (and higher) teaching credential. The RLLSC prepares teachers to be effective literacy instructors as well as to take leadership roles in introducing professional development, literacy training, and literacy program and curriculum evaluation. The RLLSC program can be completed in 15 consecutive months – beginning in the summer sessions and continuing through the fall, spring and second summer semesters.

Literacy Teaching And Learning: Aims, Approaches And Pedagogies

The combined Master of Reading and Literacy and RLAA/RLLSC program is appropriate for students who do not already have a master’s degree, whose career plans may take them outside of California, or who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in the future. The combined MA and RLAA / RLLSC program can be completed in 15 consecutive months – starting in the summer sessions and continuing through the fall, spring and second summer semesters.
