This seminar focuses on the basics of design history, which complements all graduate studies at the School of Design. Interdisciplinary in nature, this course is thematic and emphasizes student performance in a dynamic dialogue on the course topic. Course content focuses on topics related to design history and theory (human, process, product, environment, culture, and place), political thought, and contextual historical issues. Students are expected to read design papers, essays and questions, and participate in weekly discussion groups. In addition to slide lectures, online technology is used. What Kind Of Jobs Can You Get In Visual Communication Design?

This course is an introduction to three-dimensional digital visualization. Students will learn all aspects of 3D design, from modeling to producing the final image to setting up keyframes for animation. After becoming familiar with the basics of production, students are encouraged to focus on specific topics such as lighting and texturing and creating visual effects for gaming, broadcast, visualization and education. (This course is limited to students in the VISCOM-MFA, GRDE-MFA, and CMGD-MFA programs.) Lecture 2 (Fall).

This course deepens human-centered interface design. Students develop interactive web pages with functional and usable design for e-commerce, education and visual communication. Emphasis is placed on the integration and application of design skills applied to information architecture, user navigation, and user orientation. The project aims to design alternative navigation solutions for online web applications and touch screen devices such as mobile phones and touchscreens. (This course is limited to students in the VISCOM-MFA, GRDE-MFA, and CMGD-MFA programs.) Lecture 2 (Fall).

This course examines the historical, theoretical, and conceptual aspects of typography for print and screen applications. Grid structure, composition, hierarchy, message delivery, and formal aspects of typographic design are explored with an emphasis on the development of coherent type and the integration of images into a cohesive and coherent design program. How elements of temporal structure such as rhythm and tempo affect visual communication in dynamic environments are also explored and used. (This course is limited to students in the VISCOM-MFA, GRDE-MFA, and CMGD-MFA programs.) Lecture 2 (Fall).

This course focuses on motion design from storyboard to final project. Course content focuses on the visual component, and assignments translate production techniques used in traditional filmmaking into an online environment. This includes the use of line, space (two and three dimensions), composition and framing, simulation of camera movement, color and sound. Using time-based applications as authoring tools and techniques outlined in this course, students can create interactive stories such as online graphic novels and webisodes. This workshop approaches the general perspective of design studies from an interdisciplinary perspective. This course provides students with the skills necessary to further develop research plans for specific design requests with program components. Emphasis is placed on identifying connections and integrating content between these courses and the first-year experience in the Visual Communication Design program. Students choose a topic, propose a design, and develop and implement a project from start to finish. This includes research, development, evaluation, improvement, completion of completed creative projects, and documentation of the process. This course helps students prepare for a professional design career. As with design theory, content focuses on practical knowledge of manufacturing and design skills and familiarity with key business practices. An overview of business and economics as they relate to the world of design, goal setting and productivity skills, professional ethics, marketing, the interview process, and strategic analysis are discussed. The project provides information on creating an effective digital portfolio and resume based on personal strengths and interests, taking into account professional standards and career expectations. (Prerequisite: VCDE-701 or equivalent course.) Lecture 3 (Spring).

Research is the basis of every project. This course will focus on the design research and planning phases of a thesis project. Students will identify design challenges that make important contributions to the field of design while addressing needs in local, regional, and/or global communities. The course content focuses on content creation, planning, design and research to find innovative solutions through the process of concept development, ideation and process evaluation. (Prerequisite: VCDE-718 or VCDE-722 or equivalent course.) Thesis 3 (Fall).

This course will focus on a physics thesis project. Students will continue with concept development, culminating in the application and retrospective evaluation of a design problem of their choosing. The solution is presented in a public exhibition equipped with wten articulation.
