Masters Human Development And Family Studies
Human Development and Family Studies at UNCG focuses on the intersection of human development, family processes, and sociocultural contexts. The focus of our program is to understand development and family relationships in a sociocultural context and to use a strengths-based approach to study diverse children and families.

Most faculty and graduate students focus their training and research on one or more of the following major areas.
PhD students are trained at HDFS in cutting-edge research methods to support their research interests in one or more areas of specialization.
Doctoral students also complete a series of HDFS teaching practicums that develop professional learning and skills in college courses that support competitive graduate programs. The HDFS PhD program has consecutive placements for its PhD graduates and our graduates are working prolifically across the country and around the world.

Master’s in Human Development and Family Studies students enrolled in the Plan C graduate program mean they are not completing a graduate thesis. Instead of a thesis, they participate in graduate practice and complete presentations or projects.
The MHDFS program is designed to prepare students for professional roles in providing education and services to individuals and families in applied settings. The MHDFS is a practice-oriented degree for those already working in the family and social service sectors, education and care, and for those seeking employment in a practice setting. The MHDFS is not a therapeutic training degree; Graduates of this degree are not eligible to become licensed therapists or counselors. However, the MHDFS program provides excellent training for those who want to better understand children, youth and families in order to improve their service and education skills. MHDFS students work closely with a faculty member to develop their individual projects. As an MHDFS student specializing in a faculty-led project, understanding the research interests of our faculty is attractive to prospective MHDFS candidates.
The HDFS specialization is explored in the context of current issues affecting individuals and families. Graduates of the master’s degree are qualified in teaching, outreach, management, prevention and intervention programs, financial counseling and agencies that serve consumers, individuals, families and children. HDFS is an interdisciplinary lifestyle approach to the study of children, youth, and families. It includes specialty areas in neonatology, pediatrics, youth studies, family studies, family resource management, and gerontology. Graduates will make a difference to children, youth and their families. They will become future leaders in the design, management, and evaluation of early childhood and youth development, family support, and community-based programs. They will pursue research and policy related to early childhood, youth and families.

To confirm admission, an individual must have valid enrollment status in the Office of Graduate Studies. Admission to the graduate program is limited to meeting the degree and field of study requirements specified in the student’s application and statement of purpose.
Qualified applicants to the HDFS graduate program must have interests and goals that align with the knowledge and interests of the department’s faculty members as well as the course offerings. Admission decisions are made based on a comprehensive review of the applicant’s credentials.
Social And Human Development Programs
Admission to the master’s program does not mean that the student will directly enter the doctoral program; A student pursuing a master’s degree must reapply to the Graduate School office for admission to the doctoral program.

Applicants to master’s and doctoral programs are required to submit a written sample of their writing in English so that the admissions committee can assess the candidate’s writing ability, successfully participate in the doctoral program, and conduct research and presentation. form of writing. The MSc in HDFS requires 31 hours of coursework and is available in both degree and non-degree options. The PhD in HDFS requires 60 hours of coursework, including a dissertation. Completion of 9 hours of graduate-level coursework or 15 hours of Ph.D.-level coursework is required for specialization.
