Like many people, I see the exclusion of arts subjects from the new English Baccalaureate (Report, 9 May) as a major setback for our education system. For my first 18 years, living outside Swansea, access to music education was limited. A violinist taught electives at my elementary school. In charge of the local youth orchestra, the county music councilor could not read sheet music and conducted from a violin part, leaving me on the piano to hold the ensemble together. In the following decades, all this was replaced by a broad professional musical training for young people, so that our youth orchestras became the envy of the world and many famous soloists and composers appeared.

After graduating in music at university, I taught music in art schools and polytechnics under the auspices of so-called “liberal studies”. A Master of Arts (Latin: Magister Artium or Artium Magister, abbreviated MA, M.A., AM or A.M.) is a master’s degree awarded by universities in many countries. The degree is often contrasted with that of Master of Scice. Those admitted to the degree usually studied disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, such as history, literature, languages, linguistics, public administration, political science, communication studies, law or diplomacy. However, different universities have different conventions and may also offer the degree for areas that are usually considered within the natural sciences and mathematics. The degree may be awarded upon completion of coursework and passing an examination, research, or a combination of the two.
