Campbell Medicine’s mission is to prepare community-based osteopathic physicians to serve rural and underserved populations, and the MHPE degree program was created to help meet these needs by training health professionals as mentors and leaders who will help train future health workers in rural and underserved communities. By giving health professionals the skills they need to thrive as educators and leaders in the nation’s expanding schools of health professions, this program will help improve the delivery of health care to meet the needs of all populations, but especially rural and underserved populations.
“The United States is experiencing a dramatic increase in professional health care education programs: not only in medical schools, but also in physician assistants.
School Of Osteopathic Medicine Announces Master Of Health Professions Education
Programs, schools of nursing and other disciplines,” said Dr. Victoria Kaprielian, associate dean for faculty development and medical education and director of the MHPE program. “One of the challenges these schools and programs face, especially in rural areas, is however, finding qualified clients to train. Aspiring clients do not always feel prepared to teach and especially unprepared for leadership roles in education. This is especially problematic for launching residential programs in areas where health workers are already in short supply.”
Courses are taught by an interdisciplinary faculty representing the Campbell School of Education, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, with physicians, physician assistants, and other health care professionals in the classroom. The degree is designed to focus on the development of practical skills – theory and evidence-based education are taught and applied directly. The program is currently in the second semester of a pilot phase, and enrollees say they enjoy working together to get feedback from peers and faculty and apply lessons learned through projects.
The program consists of 30 credits delivered over 6 terms with a distance learning format that allows clients from all over the country to enroll. Participants have assignments that they complete on their own time, as well as weekly video conferences where they can get to know the professors and their classmates.
“The first year focuses on developing clinical leadership skills – we look at leadership styles, management and administration structures and teaching skills. In the second year we focus on curriculum delivery and development, as well as completing a master’s project,” explained Dr. Kaprielian. “Anyone interested in an academic position in health professions education would be an excellent candidate. In addition, clinicians who want to develop their leadership skills or learn to be better teachers. It is also a great opportunity for junior faculty to learn what they are needed for promotion or tenure. Our graduates are prepared to work in leadership roles in the clinic, academic teaching and administration, as well as in other positions where health-related leadership and educational skills are important.”
