What is Leadership in Higher Education? First of all: let’s define higher education leadership as a discipline. Higher education leadership focuses on building and maintaining inclusive and supportive campuses while also inspiring lifelong learners from a wide variety of backgrounds. Leaders in higher education serve as educators and academic and student services professionals who position them to directly influence the operations and policies that contribute to student success. In addition to guiding the talents and energies of teachers and students, higher education leaders play a role in ensuring that their institutions have a positive impact on individuals and communities. How To Be An Effective Leader – 5 Skills You Need To Master 1. Empathy To develop an inclusive, diverse and caring community, you must practice empathy at the leadership level. In higher education, it is imperative that leaders commit to taking meaningful action to support all students, particularly Blacks, Natives, and non-whites, as well as allies and others in society. Doing so requires empathetic thinking and social awareness. Successful leaders in higher education seek to implement the promise and power of restorative justice, with a focus on the well-being of all students, especially the most marginalized. 2.
