This course examines the historical, theoretical, and conceptual aspects of typography for print and screen applications. Grid structure, composition, hierarchy, messaging, and formal aspects of typographic design are explored, with an emphasis on developing a cohesive look and integrating images into cohesive and coherent design programs. It also examines and applies how temporal structural elements such as rhythm and tempo affect visual communication in dynamic environments. This course focuses on motion design from storyboards to the final project. Course content focuses on visual components, and assignments transfer production techniques used in traditional filmmaking to the online environment. These include the use of line, space (two and three dimensional), composition and framing, simulated camera movement, color and tone. Using a time-based application as an authoring tool and the techniques described in this course, students can create interactive stories such as online graphic novels and webisodes. Study Visual Communication Design
As an introduction to the field, this course introduces the many complex roles of design such as process, product, function, code, and usability. This workshop approaches design science from an interdisciplinary perspective. Faculty peers representing diverse campus experiences and beyond contribute their knowledge bases. This course provides students with the skills necessary to advance a research plan for a specific design request with a program component. Emphasis is placed on identifying connections and substantive integration between this course and first-year experience in the MFA Visual Communication Design program. Students choose a theme, we deliver a design proposal, and develop and implement the project from start to finish. This includes research, development, evaluation, refinement, completion of a completed creative project, and documentation of the process. This course helps students prepare for a professional design career. Similar to design theory, content focuses on practical knowledge of manufacturing and design skills and familiarity with key business practices. An overview of business and economics is provided as it relates to the world of design, goal setting and productivity skills, professional ethics, marketing, the interview process and strategic analysis. Projects are designed to create an effective digital portfolio and educational resume based on personal skills and interests while respecting professional standards and career expectations. Research is the basis of every project. This course focuses on the design research and planning phases of a thesis project. Students identify design challenges that represent a significant addition to the field of design while addressing the needs of the local, regional and/or global community. Course content focuses on content creation, planning, design and research in search of innovative solutions through the process of concept development, ideation and process evaluation.
