Masters Of Industrial Organizational Psychology – The 42-credit Industrial and Organizational Psychology (IO) Concentration prepares students for careers as practitioners and researchers by emphasizing an evidence-based practice curriculum and course activities that enhance the experiential learning of the students. You will focus on preparing yourself to facilitate effective leadership within organizations and help those same organizations hire, train and motivate employees.
Why IO psychology? IO psychology applies psychological principles developed from rigorous scientific research to enable problem solving in the workplace. Because half of adults’ waking lives are spent in the workplace, IO psychologists contribute to aligning organizations’ missions with their people. We do this by focusing on the essential human components that create high-functioning organizations, including selecting the right job applicants, training employees and measuring their performance, designing ‘strategies of professional growth and motivation, the assessment of the organizational climate and the facilitation of change management. Because of the important role that IO psychologists play in the success of organizations, job opportunities in the field continue to grow. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has labeled IO psychology as the fastest growing profession, with a median salary of more than $77,350.

The IO psychology curriculum develops students’ competencies in all areas recommended by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP, Division 14 of the American Psychological Association). Our students engage in real-world and simulated experiential learning activities, such as conducting job analyzes with real clients, preparing staff appraisal reports, and -development of an organizational survey.
The IO Psychology concentration also offers students opportunities to prepare for the global workforce through relevant courses and international collaborative projects (both virtual and in-person), such as the European Erasmus Winter School program Mundus.

Recent graduate Leigh Cantor, M.S. ’21, earned a paid summer internship at CapSource as a result of her capstone project X-Culture. X-Culture is a marketing project in which students from all over the world join virtual global teams to perform analysis on a company, develop strategies for the company to improve profitability, win sponsors and match new markets in countries another. The project consists of a 25-page report with three sections: market analysis (industry and competition analysis, competitors, and company SWOT analysis), marketing (channels and promotional materials), and pricing and distribution (proposed partnerships and suggestions for growth, profit, and new markets around the corner). After the project, there is an optional presentation that students can make that summarizes the findings; if their presentation is selected, the team can then present live at the closing ceremony, where representatives of the companies involved in the project will be present to hear the findings and ask clarifying questions. Cantor’s X-Culture project—which was selected from 650 global teams—resulted in landing her the opportunity to intern with CapSource.
