There are over 130 full-time, four-year colleges and universities in New England, serving students from every state in the United States and hundreds of other countries. A black student has only a 55% chance of graduating in her six years or less, compared to almost 70% of Asian students, 67% of white students, and 60% of Hispanic students. 55%. This problem is not caused by just one type of school or her one area in the area. A distinctive feature of the New England higher education environment is the many liberal arts colleges located in the region’s densely populated areas and rural communities. Asian students achieve nearly 16% higher degree completion rates than black students at liberal arts colleges. However, liberal arts colleges are economically diverse, with more students receiving federal loans and Pell grants than the regional average.
Although not as common as liberal arts colleges, large universities have their own diversity challenges. Despite offering in-state tuition options and generally low cost of attendance, its students do not always represent true financial diversity. Less than a quarter of her students receive Pell grants and less than half receive federal loans. Also, major universities are, on average, about 63% white, which is a poor representation of what the region really looks like. However, larger colleges are more successful than smaller colleges in getting all students to complete their degree within 150% of the expected completion time, regardless of race or ethnicity.
The lack of diversity in New England higher education institutions represents a national challenge to include all people in higher education opportunities. However, what we can learn from analyzing the diversity indicators of liberal arts colleges and major universities is that each school has its own strategy for dealing with diversity. A network of New England colleges and universities will not reach its true potential unless it recognizes all voices and perspectives in the classroom.
