Dr Burbage joined in 2019 and is currently Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for the MHPE Program. He has worked in education for nearly 20 years, with experience in higher education, primary education, non-profit organizations, government contracting, and the commercial sector. Dr. Burbage has taught since 2010 and has mentored hundreds of students. His research interests are equity, policy, organization and management, SOTL and distance learning.

Dr. Peggy Gesing is Director of the Medical and Health Professions Education Program and Assistant Professor in the School of Health Education. Dr. Gesing earned a doctorate in higher education from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in adult learning and developmental education from Cleveland State University. His research and teaching foundation is built on 16 years of experience at a top research university. His research focuses on international student mobility and education as drivers of economic opportunity and social justice.

Dr. Lonart is a professor of pathology and anatomy and a neuroscience researcher. His work focuses on synaptic transmission and mapping synaptic networks in normal and diseased brains involved in fear, learning and sleep regulation. Before joining, Dr. Lonart works in Dr.’s lab. Thomas C. Südhof while studying the cellular mechanisms of neurotransmitter release.

Dr. Richard Gonzalez is Assistant Professor of Pathology and Anatomy and Director of Education in Contemporary Human Anatomy. Dr. Gonzalez received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from SUNY Buffalo in 2007. For the past 20 years, in addition to teaching anatomy to medical and health students, Dr. Gonzalez has been the long-time Director of the Master of Forensic Science Program and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Conducted professional studies at Drexel University before joining in 2019.

Dr. Newton earned a doctorate in educational psychology and a master’s degree in teacher education and educational research from Regent University in Virginia Beach. Dr. Newton is passionate about education and he has over 20 years experience in the field of education. Now, Dr. Newton works with Graduate Medical Education as Director of the GME Education Program. In this way, they help design and implement advanced training programs and provide training to residents, faculty and staff in a variety of ways. In addition, he serves on Institutional Review Boards and provides expertise as an ethics/ethicist when reviewing protocols.

Mr. Gemeda, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion oversees Diversity and Inclusion. Prior to joining, he served for eight years as the Assistant Dean for Diversity Affairs and Community Health at NYU School of Medicine and as the founding director of the Center for African Diaspora Health. Mr. Gemeda has over a decade of experience in international and local efforts to reduce health disparities and increase diversity in the healthcare workforce. He was involved in the development of NIH-funded clinical research facilities, as well as the world-renowned student and graduate recruitment and retention programs at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

Dr Styron is Associate Professor and Director of Education and Assessment at Sentara’s Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning. He received his Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and Design from the University of Southern Mississippi and has extensive experience in financial management, interprofessional education, and practicing and learning active strategies such as group-based learning. While at the University of South Alabama, Ph.D. Styron is part of the $1.3 million, three-year HRSA program to build the skills of health professionals and students to deliver high-quality, effective community care. – Adjust the clinical environment to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Felicia Toreno has been an Assistant Professor and Director of Ultrasound at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA since 2015. She currently serves as Chair of the Department of Ultrasound and Imaging Education. Dr. Toreno has over 35 years experience as a sonographer and educator and is registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Pregnancy, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Adult Echocardiography and Vascular Technology.
