“Online learning has increased dramatically, along with the knowledge and ability to teach online programs,” said Alina Baltazar, professor of sociology and director of the MSW program. “Busy workers see the need to pursue a Master of Social Work to open up more job opportunities, but they can’t make enough time to attend live classes that are taught during the day or to relocate.”

Designed for busy professionals, this program consists of live but fully remote courses, scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. EST. The remaining 50 percent of the course time is completed offline. Each group accepts a maximum of 25 students.

Compared to the current in-person MSW program, the new online program will be taught at a slower pace. “Live class time is cut in half, which gives us more flexibility to meet the needs of the program,” explained Baltazar. “The curriculum will be delivered quickly so that professionals can maintain their current responsibilities. Live class teaching will be in the evening so that students can maintain a full-time job and family responsibilities.”

“I have to say that I appreciate the MSW distance learning program that the university offers,” said Ashella Fletcher, a distance student in the first semester of her degree. Fletcher is already taking online courses.

According to Fletcher, the lessons are very interactive. “I learned a lot from all my professors, who are very knowledgeable, organized and disciplined. I would recommend [the program] to anyone who wants to continue [and] improve their studies as a social worker,” she said.

The online MSW program does not require a bachelor’s degree in social work, program organizers say. However, having a Social Work degree reduces the length of the program. For students with a bachelor’s degree in another subject, the program lasts three years and starts in the fall of 2022. For students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in social work, the MSW program takes two years to complete and begins in the fall of 2023. .

“I love all the professors and I can tell they really care about us,” said Kiley Johnson, a second-year MSW student. “I can see the effort they have made and they are trying to help us win. I appreciate that, and it made the experience better. “
