In many medical and dental facilities we visit for the first time, we find documentation deficiencies, outdated OSHA policies, and violations of hazard communication standards. This became more apparent after the alignment with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
Employee And Culture Engagement
Documentation, or the lack thereof, is one of the biggest mistakes in medical and dental practices. Every new employee must be trained within 10 days of hire. This training does not have to be as complex as the annual training, but it should include information about who to report an injury to and the location of various items such as OSHA manuals, safety manuals, eyewash stations, etc. , and a medical waste container. If you have special equipment, such as a laser, explain how and what it needs. In the case of lasers, this is usually safety glass and/or engineering controls such as guards or escape systems.
Clinic staff and all employees at risk of infection should be offered a series of hepatitis B vaccines at the time of employment. If they are not vaccinated and want to be, start the vaccination series and document the date of the first shot. If they are, get the documents.
They can provide a copy of the vaccination record or the easiest way is to ask them to sign a Hepatitis B Vaccination Consent/Immunization form.

Safety needles and other medical devices should be evaluated annually. This is optional and does not depend on the number of injuries you have had in the past year. OSHA revised the bloodborne disease standard several years ago, and it requires you to evaluate these devices and implement them as needed.
