We recently converted a dark and dated bonus room from our bedroom into a fun nursery. It has dark wood stained paneling and dark green linoleum on the floor (think 1950s grade school). Now it’s fresh and beautiful and has a storybook vibe. Oh, the power of paint!!! (and a new floor).

But it takes some extra steps to paint wood panels, and we tried different methods (spray, roller and brush). Share what we do, and how to paint wood panels better, here!

1. Prepare by removing nails, hinges, filling holes, restoring trim, removing baseboards, etc. Dust/clean if your panel is dirty. We considered washing it out with TSP or lightly Sanding it, but these panels do not have much shine and they take paint / Primer well without it.

2. Prime. Don’t do what we did for this step. We rolled all over with a typical contractor grade flat paint / Primer we use all over our house (Sherwin Williams Promar 700) (and brushed into the grooves). It took a while, to get a primer on all the grooves. One coat is dry and we can see that there are areas that show blemishes even with multiple coats.

So, we researched and discovered Kilz Restoration, a stain-blocking primer with oil-based, yet water-cleaning performance. We roll everything, 2 coats. It blocks stains!

3. Paint. We sprayed the paint, after it took a long time to roll with a primer brush. First we taped off the door and window.

We want a dusty teal on the walls, and white (Sherwin Williams Alabaster) ceiling. We sprayed the ceiling with Promar 700 (flat paint) and the walls with blue-green paint (Benjamin Moore Mount Saint Anne).

How To Paint Wood Paneling (spray And/or Roll!) / Create / Enjoy

Here is another mistake we made… after we did the ceiling, we tried to protect the cardboard shielding and spraying. It worked well, but we didn’t spend enough time between spraying the ceiling and walls, so some white stains. There are also some areas of overspray that we need to touch up later.

If you are doing two colors, spraying can work, but we recommend waiting longer – like 2 days! – before touching the recently sprayed area.

In retrospect, for a job of this size, we think it would probably have been easier/worthwhile to use a hand sprayer rather than a roller/brush or a large sprayer as we used. But, it’s nice to have a syringe to get into all the grooves of the panels.

It’s not done yet – still need to do some electrical stuff, you can see on the opposite wall… progress, figuring out how to get the overhead lights in place of the lights that are there. Hoping to do it this weekend. Also maybe a few more decor things, like finding the perfect bed sheet pattern!

We think this paneling/this room was done in the 50s or 60s, well after our house was built in 1937. If the original/historic wood was of better quality, I might not be right about painting it…but I think often wood paneling is not worth it. It can be really overwhelming if there are many in a room. You can remove it, but leave it and paint it to give instant character to the room (in whatever color you want!)!

How To Paint Wood Paneling

Should I paint my wood paneling? Are the wood panels faded? What kind of paint should you use on wood paneling? I asked myself all these questions and more when we bought Little Pax Ranch.

And now I will show you how to paint the panel. I even made a step by step video to show you how.

How To Paint Wood Paneling

It’s not urgent. I’m a firm believer in decorating your home however it makes you happy… But it’s definitely not as popular now as it used to be. If you’re looking for an inexpensive update to spruce up your home, painting your paneling can be a great home improvement project for you and can even increase the value of your home.

The question should really be, what type of primer should you use on wood paneling? The most important thing is to use a good quality water or oil based foundation

If properly primed, boards or panels can be painted with almost any wall paint. I like the satin paint on the panel. It’s more forgiving and wipeable than flat, but gives the panel a soft and subtle look.

Should I Replace Fake Wood Paneling?

But don’t worry, I will show you from start to finish how to avoid this mistake and the paint panel to last.

Remove the hardware from the walls (or ceiling, if that’s what you’re painting), including the electrical covers. And move your furniture to get clear access.

Next you need to prepare your paneling. The glossier the panels, the harder the paint will stick. The panels I just painted were really matte, so I just gave them a good scrub with all-purpose cleaner and an old washcloth to get rid of the dirt and grease and grime. TSP is also a good cleaning option.

Using Paintable Wallpaper To Cover Wood Paneling

However, if your panels are sealed with something glossy, you should consider two options to improve adhesion. My first choice would be to use a liquid remover. You simply wipe with a clean damp cloth and let the chemicals work. However, as with chemical harvesters, you need to take proper precautions.

The last option is to give the entire wall a light sanding with medium-sized sandpaper to remove the shine so that the primer and paint can adhere. However, this is a messy option, and if your paneling is not real wood, be careful not to sand through the wood-look finish. So I would recommend a deglosser instead.

Remember, you don’t have to remove it completely, just remove the gloss coat so the paint can stick. Be careful not to sand too deep if the panels are a veneer.

Diy Faux Wall Planking

If you’re going to use a delosser or sandblaster, you still want to make sure the wall is thoroughly cleaned before moving on to the next step.

Start taping your baseboards and other cuts. I usually just free cut the pieces, but with paneling you need to stick your brush into the cracks near your cut, so you need to tape it with a high quality painter’s tape. Then make sure you put down tarps to protect your floor.

Once the walls are removed and clean of dust and oil and everything is plastered, you can start priming. I prefer a water-based, stain-blocking primer for this big thing because it makes it easier to clean.

How To Install, Paint, & Trim Wall Paneling

Here’s where it can get tricky: the width of your panel and the depth of the groove will determine the best way to apply your primer and paint. The wall I recently painted is 2.5″ pine boards, so a 2-3″ angled brush is the easiest way to apply a stain-blocking primer.

To fill the grooves in your paneled walls, you may need to paint along each groove with a brush. If your grooves are close, like mine, it may be possible to paint flat areas with a brush while the grooves are painted.
