The first thing to do when deciding what color to paint the exterior of your home is to choose a shade of color. When I say shade, do you want a light, medium or dark shade for your home? At this point, you don’t have to think about anything other than deciding whether you want a light color or white, a medium tone or a medium shade, or black.

For most of you, choosing a shade is a quick and easy decision, and you’ll know right away whether you want a light or dark home. But some of you may be insecure and sensitive and need help making this decision. It helps to browse exteriors on Pinterest to determine which shade will best suit your home. Before you go too far with a color decision, you should consider the color of your roof. If you have black or neutral gray, you don’t have to worry too much about color clashing. Unfortunately, I have dark brown hair with a light red undertone, so colors like green or blue just don’t work for me and clash. For those of you who have red, brown, green, or blue-gray on your roof, be sure to consider the color of the roof when choosing an exterior paint color palette.
If you’re like me and have a dark brown roof with red undertones, you’ll want to stick with a true neutral base color so your home can play it safe. If you have greens or blue-grays, you have a little more contrast and want to avoid color clashes, if you have a neutral color or a lighter shade than blue to blend and compliment it. don’t fight If you have a black roof, you can do almost anything.
Choose Paint Colors With A Color Wheel
If your home has stone or brick, you should also consider strong underlays on your brick or stone. If your house is all brick and you just need to pick a trim color, I would go with the lightest, medium or darkest color found in the stone/brick and use that as the trim color.
If your home is not all brick/stone and half brick/brick, or if you only have brick/stone accents, you have a lot of wiggle room with color choices for your home’s exterior color. As long as your body color is a very light shade of the brick/stone undertone, you shouldn’t have any contrasting issues. For example, if your brick has a warm undertone and you want to go gray for the house’s exterior color, choose a warm, light gray instead of a cool gray. Thus, the gray heat combines/mixes the new body color with the winter. Will you stay?
Next, after you’ve evaluated your roof color and decided on a shade, you need to consider the effect of light on exterior paint colors, separate from choosing interior colors. I’ll save you a lot of time by saying that daylight/sunlight will make the exterior look cooler/bluer, which happens when there’s too much light with a paint color. As crazy as it sounds, you need to go at least 2-3 times warmer to the outside color to get a balanced color rather than cold and blue. I’ll show you what I mean.

Last year I worked with a couple who were building a beautiful home on a wooded lot. They wanted their house to be green, to have all the trees in it. The house had many different exterior accents/elements, including swings with traditional trim, a few dramatic changes in roof angles, lots of triangles, stone accents, etc. stick to one main color and one design color because then all the beautiful architectural elements will stand out more and won’t get lost in all the color changes. People don’t know that colored triangle and stone are also colors. Below you can see what the house looked like when we were done.
