Scholarships For Criminal Justice Majors – The Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) Award is presented annually and was created to recognize academic excellence and service to the Omega Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society during the academic year.

The Sam Dameron Leadership and Service Award is presented annually and was created to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and excellence in service to the Criminal Justice Association (CJA) during the academic year.

Scholarships For Criminal Justice Majors

After a career as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Glenn W. Brenner retired in 1980 and chose to complete his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at the university. sir. Brenner freely shared his experiences with the ATF (including his investigation of the Mason County, WV Jail bombing in 1976) with criminal justice students and encouraged many to pursue careers in federal law enforcement. He was nearing completion of his master’s degree in criminal justice when he died unexpectedly in 1988. This memorial scholarship is funded by donations from Brenner’s family and friends and is awarded to graduate or undergraduate students, with preference given to those who have worked or are currently working in the criminal justice profession. The scholarship was established in 1988.

Social Work Scholarships

Roger W. Simmons is a 1972 graduate who had a career in federal law enforcement. He was a special agent of the US Treasury for criminal investigations. Roger grew up in Huntington and always had a desire to serve in federal law enforcement. He established this scholarship in 2007 to support criminal justice students and believes in giving back to the university, as it gave him the education to pursue his dream.

Dora L. Simmons is the mother of Leroy and Roger Simmons. She was a single mother raising two sons after her husband, Dunford, died in 1956. She always instilled in her sons the desire to work hard in whatever they did. This scholarship was established in 2008 to support criminal justice students by Roger, as a gift to his mother. Roger said his mother didn’t have much education but always insisted he should go to university. She was a special woman who died on May 8, 2006.

Janet Kitto Schumacher is a longtime Michigan resident, mother of four, and graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Janet was introduced to the university’s history, campus, students, faculty and staff by Roger Simmons. Because of his passion for Huntington, pride in the herd, and dedication to student success, he was given the opportunity to endow a scholarship in his name to students in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology by Mr. Roger Simmons.
