The theoretical and evidence bases for this concentration include knowledge of normative and non-normative developmental trajectories, stressful life transitions, interpersonal processes, environmental conditions and circumstances that support children’s growth and development needs, as well as family social justice needs. The curriculum offers multilevel training that builds experience for intervening at the individual, family, community, and political levels.

Students go on to work in a variety of settings, such as public and private social agencies, school systems, mental health facilities, and health care facilities. Several sub-concentration areas of the department may be completed to complement the Child and Family Welfare Concentration: Accreditation Programs in School Social Work; and child protection programs (CALSVEC and UCCF).

The 3-year, part-time program is available to students interested in a child and family concentration area. Students in this program will attend classes in the morning and work with their field agencies to complete the required internship hours during their academic program. Please note that this is not an evening and weekend program, classes and practice will be scheduled during regular working hours. The additional cost for MSV for 8 quarters is $16,440 (total approximately $65,760), while the additional cost for part-time with additional PPS credentials is $24,660 (total approximately $73,980). These costs are based on CA residency and current published enrollment information (subject to change).
